Hi I have a few questions..

Does anyone know why the enter requirement for commerce at monash is so much higher than business? location? prestige? is commerce a more recognized and favored degree than business?

And... If i was interested in doing a finance with maths degree and i miss out on Melbourne what would be on par/ the next best thing in terms of employability and this particular subject? Monash Business or Commerce with Maths breadth or diploma?

thanks guys

why is bcom seen as been far superior and prestigious to bbus at monash?

prestigiousness. The subjects are far more advanced/sophisticated in BCom than BBus.

Right, thanks a lot SM. If i don't want to go to clayton everyday what is my alternative if i want to do finance with maths (if i dont get into commerce at melb) do you think. Is BBus that much less recognizable?

BBus is a poor man's BComm in a nutshell, so the short answer to ur question is yes.
Some snippets of what goes on in IRC:

Hey. If you are thinking to do a Finance + Math double major (bloody great combo btw, can lead you so !#$$$@ far), I would highly recommend you do it at Monash's Clayton Campus, BCom. BBus is just far too basic, and really is a joke compared to the sophisticatedness of the BCom. I'm also transferring there next year if I don't make to UoM.

Oh btw I should stress that the BBus is a great degree for marketing, management and accounting. But if you are doing Finance and Econ in particular, why short-sell (hahaha pun, if you get it i'll karma you lol) yourself? Goto the best that there is to obtain the cream of the crop positions in the future. :)

why short-sell
ahahah i think i get it.  are you referring to 'short selling' - borrowing to earn profit from a decline in security value?

Yep. Can I ask you, what type of fin position are you seeking as a career?

Because if it is trading, research or ficc[fixed income, currencies and commodities] structuring (lol impossible to get i must admit) then doing a Eco/Fin major is beneficial. But if you decide to go into IBD (investment banking division) then acc/fin is more appropriate.

But yeah, doing math as you're breadth should work out fine. :)

oh btw, thats correct :D. Great work, funny enough some fin grads don't even understand short selling, so you're the top 80% without even starting the degree :)

Im most interested in IBD, trading, research, stock analysing - maybe start of with a bit of work in broking or work as an analyst?. I thought finance/maths would be fitting? What do you think?
ps. i love maths but i didn't do specialist (i wish i did spec)

Wow, you're an awesome guy, just like me :)

Doing BCom + Math is great, but as part of the BCom degree, you can do double majors.  :)

Eh, I phailed spec and I'm still doing trading, they really don't need rocket science if you're not doing structuring. :P

Oh btw, this may interest you, might inspire you as well (my fav doco show): :D

I will definitely check that out. I could use a bit of inspiration. I really appreciate the help, thanks a lot. I'm feeling much better now that i know i have a solid fall back from UoM Comm. Good Luck on transferring into melbourne or monash commerce.

ps. do you have a strong preference for either?

Yeah. My first pref is at Melb and second is at Monash BCom. :)

Melb is the clear leader for finance as it has the FMAA, amazing subjects and an awesome networking base. :)

I think the most important thing is that whatever course you're in you do it really well. The person who is in the lower ranked in the 300 students or BCom is not going to fair better than a student ranked higher in BBus. Same goes for Melbourne's 600 Commerce grads.

But ranks aren't really equivalent across courses. I am under the impression that attaining a high rank in UoM commerce is worth more than a high rank at BCom, or especially BBus at Monash. With BBus you would limit yourself.

yep. Look at 333-309 Derivative Securities (https://app.portal.unimelb.edu.au/CSCApplication/view/2009/333-309) and AFF3751 Futures and Options Markets (http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/units/AFF3751.html). AFF3751 just looks "deprived" compared to 333-309 really.

edit: url correction lol
