Should I go on student exchange?

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of going on student exchange to one of the off-shore campuses of the same university next semester.

Do you reckon it's worth it if I can't get the units I complete to contribute to my overall average?

The reason why I am hesitant is because I want my average to be higher than what it is currently and if I go on student exchange that means I have less units to work with to help bump up my average.

Anyone thoughts?

I don't think I've ever met someone who's regretted going on exchange.
BSc (Hons) 2015 Melbourne

PhD 2016-??? Melbourne

I want to be an architect.

Have you ever considered going exchange yourself (if you didn't go)?

Currently on exchange at an off-shore campus. Highly recommend it.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to shoot them at me in this thread or via personal message (but preferably in this thread so that others in a similar situation can benefit!).

Which uni are you studying at?

Is it monash? Which off-shore campus did you go to?

Too late for me to go now. I seriously considered it in second year, but life got in the way, as they say.

Monash, yep. Currently at the Monash University Malaysia campus. Which one(s) are you considering?

I'm at curtin uni currently. They have a campus in malaysia as well but my marks there wouldn't contribute to my CWA/WAM/GPA (whatever you wanna call it). Do your marks in Malaysia contribute to your WAM? I have been told that they do.

How is cost of living in malaysia? How much money did you take with you before you left?
Can you still get youth allowance while over there (if you get it)?

My marks do, indeed, contribute to my WAM and GPA. It's basically the same as completing a semester at home, just overseas.

The cost of living is remarkably cheap; however, this is furthered by Monash's Malaysia Package, which is quite generous.

I've never been on Youth Allowance, but from what I have gleaned, you may still be eligible. You should also be able to get an OS-HELP loan.

How many people go for cross campus exchange per semester at monash to offshore campuses?

At my uni, next semester will be the first time they will be doing it. So, far I am the only person applying.

Fewer than what should be the case, considering the benefits. About 25 students travelled from Australia are studying in Malaysia this semester. Comparatively, about 120 are studying in Australia from Malaysia. It is quite skewed. Monash also has programs in South Africa and Italy; I believe even fewer students take these opportunities.

Well done for being the trend-setter! I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of peers at this stage; you'll be sure to make friends when you're over there. :)

Did you notice any differences in quality of education between offshore campus and your home campus or were the differences relatively minor?

Were the lecturers easy to understand in the Malaysian campus? Would the Monash Uni staff members over there be largely expats or Malaysians?

Marks can always be fixed, experiences are what you will really regret not taking up. If you're interested and the circumstances permit you to, can't see why you wouldn't take it up!

Take another degree to do it :p.

Coming from a super curious year 11,

If I end up doing med at Monash, are there still these exchange opportunities available?

Alternatively if I did commerce at Melbourne, where can I find the available university list from?
