Hi, I can't decide between commerce and Science and was wondering if I started doing one and wanted to swap after a semester or two would that time have been wasted?

No, all credits can be transferred after the first semester. (Assuming you do 3x science and 1x commerce or the other way around since you can only credit a maximum of three level 1 breadth subjects).

If you study more than a semester and then transfer, thats when you have to make up for the missed subjects.

Could that be done by doing subjects that run in the summer semester?
