Afternoon Exams -Exam Day Plan Advice

Evening AN,

For all my life thus far, I've only ever completed morning exams. Thus, my routine has been rather consistent and straightforward. That is, review notes once more in the evening, and completing the previous year's exam. I'd wake up in the morning at 7:00, go about my morning as usual, and have a 9-10 exam start, in which I may have consulted some last minute notes if I felt it was necessary.

Now, with several of my exams having an afternoon session, I'm not exactly sure how I should go about it. Would it be illogical, tiring and over taxing to complete a practice exam of the previous year when I wake up? Do I wake up later so as to avoid potentially feeling tired later on in the day? Should I study for another subject in the morning for a little, and then progress onto revision for that day's subject? Clearly, I'm not quite sure what the best plan of action is, and so I look forward to any advice and suggestion offered.

Thank you! :)
The GOAL: Attain a RAW study score of 40+ in all my subjects.

Courses I would like to study in order of preference include: Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Biomedicine or Bachelor of Science.

2014: Biology [42]
2015: English Language [??] | Chemistry [??] | Physics [??] | Mathematical Methods (CAS) [??] | Specialist Mathematics [??]

Hi there!!

I guess that there is no 'right' way to go about it, however if it were me, I wouldn't be completing a practice exam in the morning before the exam. - That way, you might risk tiring yourself out before the actual exam, and I don't see how it would be beneficial at that stage.
That being said, I'd probably just read over your notes, go over any past/recurring mistakes from past exams/SACs, and maybe even 'teach' an object/person what you know - just to reiterate your knowledge.
But I definitely wouldn't do anything too heavy the day of the exam.
(And I probably wouldn't study for another subject, as you run the risk of experiencing retroactive interference [psych reference]). - Additionally, you run the risk of 'burning out' before the actual exam.

But again, this is just how I would personally go about it.

Good luck!!

Agree with what glasses said

Tbh I'd just wake up at routine time (important to stay in routine especially during exam time) and then just chill

I'd rather just calm my nerves and have a clear mind for the exam than adding additional fuss and problems by revising more and other subjects....just take it step by step and live in the moment...extra stress isn't going to help at this stage

Remember, you've done all you can up to this point, just back yourself and your hard work you put it

I probably wouldn't do a prac exam (it takes too much concentration and if you can't do questions you'll probably panic), however, doing nothing would panic me even more.  The number of marks I've scraped from that morning's study is phenomenal.

It really depends on
a) what type of subject it is (e.g. a content-heavy subject is easier to do this for than a maths subject)
b) how well you're prepared for the exam

These were the sort of steps I used:
1.  Skim really quickly over the whole course (using the study design for guidance; 'Do I know X, do I know how to do Y...').
2.  Note down anything I didn't know or wasn't that sure of.
3.  From that, create a list of exactly what I wanted to cement, learn or practise, strictly ordered by importance (anything small or challenging I left till last as I probably wouldn't get the same return in marks from learning them as from learning something else).
4.  Go through these one by one.  Don't try to learn them all; just start at the top of the list and solidly learn/revise topics downwards.  Remember that if you don't get far on the list, you've still learnt the most important things.  Don't try to learn too many things, and keep going back to what you've just learnt/revised, because you can only fit so much into one brain in a few hours.

Other things I did included generally reviewing and reading my notes, and writing a list of 'watchouts' for the exam (specific things I wanted to remember all through the exam and not make mistakes on).

I found that 'doing' something calmed my nerves; also the last thing you want is to start jumping and flicking randomly through the course trying to cover everything all at once, because you suddenly start panicking because you can't cover everything and are going to fail.  Keep it organised, and keep going over stuff again and again, and I personally believe you'll get a long way.  But this is just my opinion.

Just going to go against all these dissenters out there ;) (jks <3 you all)

Personally I don't think doing one practice exam on the morning is that bad. Assuming you wake up at 9am and you leave at 2, there's 3-4 hours of solid time that you can use. Of course, this is assuming that you're pretty confident of your abilities, the exam could backfire and destroy your confidence.

For me personally, i've left the 2013 VCAA methods E2 for Thursday morning, simply because I know that destroying it will be probably immensely satiating (given how 117-118/120 was a 50 that year) and also because Methods is by far my strongest subject. Moreover, nothing pumps me up more than knowing i've just aced an exam previously.

Apart from that, i'm probably going to take the rest of the day off and just meditate or whatever floats my boat :)

Prac exams on the morning of the exam aren't too bad if that's what you need to do. Pretty sure I did most of my VCE physics study the morning of the exam, smashed out a few pracyys before taking up the hot-seat. Having said that, I wouldn't recommend that style of revision to most people.

I'm taking most of today off, but if it floats your boat, sure! :)

I personally find that cramming anything in the morning tends to distort all the knowledge I've already consolidated. I think chilling the morning of the exam has given me the best results in the past. If I'm shaky maybe on one or two lectures I'll allow myself to quickly brush over them (for uni). Back in VCE I made sure I did nothing on the morning of an afternoon exam. I slept in, had some top notch food and just went into the exam. That kind of translates into how I do things in uni too.

I think studying on the day is counter-productive altogether. By the time the exam day arrives, you should have built your knowledge over time. I am similar to EspoirTron, in saying that for an afternoon exam, I sleep in, eat, and arrive at the exam.

Shoving more and more information into your brain right before an exam is arguably negative. For a second, look at the psychological side of things. If you are going over exams/doing further study on the day, and you notice a flaw in your knowledge, this could negatively impact your mental state right before an exam. Having that state of mind when you walk into an exam won't help anyone. I know this has happened to me before, so i'm speaking from my personal experience.

Be confident with all of the hard work you have put in for your exam revision and trust your knowledge. Just my opinion anyway.
