No biology major in Monash?

Hey guys

Just looked on the Monash website and pure biology is not an option as a major on the handbook list???

It diverged into specifics like biotechnology, immunology ,etc but didn't have just straight biology, unlike other sciences like chem and physics

Is this true ? Or is the website wrong?

Thanks !!

You can only do general biology in first year after that you would have to choose from zoology, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, ecology and conservation biology, physiology, developmental biology, human pathology, immunology or plant sciences. You could also do more than one major if you wanted.

Yes I believe you can still do two majors but this may have changed so you may want to contact the Science faculty to clarify. There are no majors purely in Biology and as SammyBoy mentioned after the generic BIO1011 and BIO1022 first year sequence Biology diverges into several fields.

Can confirm this does not change - it's required for the advanced degree, and the normal BSc has less restrictions, so faculty should not have any policy to stop it.

However, here's a point - if you're looking to branch off, you don't HAVE to do units to get majors or minors. Yes, you need a major, but the rest of your units could be electives to do lots of different bio units if you like a lot of the different topics, as opposed to shooting for the second major)

Melbourne uni doesn't have a general biology major either. You could do a science degree at rmit and major in biological science or do a bachelor of biological science at deakin. Monash or Melbourne are probably better though cause they have a lot better subject choice. You'd probably be better of doing first year bio at monash or melbourne you could decide which area(s) of biology you find most interesting/enjoyable and pursuing them rather than doing a general biology major at deakin/rmit.

Pure biology isn't really a science in the sense that it makes sense to say Chemistry is.

What would one actually do in "biology", especially at an advanced level? It's more of a wide umbrella. If you have something in mind when you think "biology" (i.e. you think of animals, you think of plants, you think of microbes, etc), you may find another major that covers it.

EspoirTron, was wondering, what is the difference between biomedical science and biomedicine?

There is none! I've just put it as Biomedicine in my Bio. They're both the same degree and at Monash it is known fully as the Bachelor of Biomedical Science although we often tend to just call it Bachelor of Biomedicine
