Amy's French Tuition: Summer Holidays & 2016

My Background
Hello everyone, my name is Amy and I'm offering French tutoring for Units 1/2 and 3/4, as well as students who are preparing to go on exchange.   In 2014 I completed my VCE, duxing French at my school with a score of 44 [51.4] including a score of 100/100 in the oral exam, even though I had never learnt any French before or outside of school before I was 15, when I went on a short summer exchange to France, fell in love with languages and began my self study.  I received an ATAR of 99.50 and was both Dux of my college and Dux of five out of my six subjects.

I offered tutoring throughout last year in multiple subjects but in the end found out that French was the subject where I really have the most to give - I consider languages differently to a lot of other teachers and students and I have found this approach to be both extremely helpful to my students and helpful to myself.  This approach and love of languages has allowed me to go from little to no knowledge of German to having passed the B2 ÖSD exam (required to allow you to study any subject in German at an Austrian university) in less than a year in 2015.

How I Tutor French
I believe that supported self-study and real use of a language are the keys to improving your French - I know that sounds obvious.  But the truth is that most school classes don't really don't allow for this and most students I've worked hadn't truly studied before with that in mind.  I don't believe that that is usually the school's fault either - there's no way every student can get the amount of language use they need within a classroom environment.

That's where I step in as a tutor.  I don't pretend that I'm able to give you all the language practice you need in an hour a week though - you do simply need more than that and practise more regularly to make great leaps in your French.  What I do offer though is a dual service though, as both a VCE French tutor and as a French coach.  As a VCE tutor, I help with SAC and exam preparation.  After working with multiple examiners during VCE and many students from different schools, I'm able to work with you within the framework of VCE assessment.  It is essentially, how you can improve your marks based on the French level you have.  My second role is something different though.  As a French coach I support you in your French study, working with you on specific areas of your French during the session, and then helping with how to structure your own self-study during the week.  By self-study I don't mean 'study' as in spending a ridiculous of time spent with your school textbook though.  I'm talking about how you can integrate authentic French into your day and how you can work on usable French skills regularly, no matter what your level.  I am able to provide a large amount resources and tips based on experience.

How I Run Sessions
"But didn't you just say you're going to go to university in Vienna?"
Yes I did!  Luckily for us though, this has very little impact on the way I teach because I find online tutoring to be extremely effective for languages.  I use both skype and google docs at the same time during my sessions, which means that we both have access to a document with all that we are working on as we go, while also being able to use video and audio at the same time.  You can then later access the document whenever you like or print out if you want at the end of the session.  It also makes it easy for me to pass on resources and both parties have no travel time to get to the session.

I am available most days from 6 or 7pm onwards, which will change to 4 or 5pm onwards with the change in daylight savings.  Until daylight savings, sessions at 8 and 9am on weekends are also a possibility.  Please contact me with days you are interested in for a more precise schedule.
I charge $30/hr for tutoring.
For new students, I offer a pdf assessment including your language goals and level, followed by a half priced first session where we can further discuss what you'd like out of your tutoring and get straight into improving your French.  Parents can also feel free to sit in on this first session.
Payment is done by bank transfer, which attracts no fees as my bank account is Australian.

Please contact me for any questions you have or if you'd like to get started.
