Difference between Commerce and Commerce Specialist?

Just wanted to ask a quick question (don't think the Ask Monash thread will answer it anytime soon) but would anybody know the difference between a Bachelor of Economics/Finance for the new Commerce Specialist course coming into 2016 versus a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in either Economics/Finance? Just a bit confused by it all that's all since I'm looking at combining one of the two with a double degree in Biomed/Science or Law but not too sure about the Commerce part!

From what I've researched, Commerce Specialist allows you to go straight into the units related to your major. So, if you do Actuarial Science under Commerce Specialist, you will have to do minimal core units as part of your specialisation. You only have to do Economics, Stats and Accounting. Under the other specialisations there's even less core units to complete.

If you do a normal Bachelor of Commerce, you have to do six core units (Law, Economics, Acc, Stats, Management, Marketing) in order to fulfill the requirements for the degree. You have to do this regardless of what major you choose, even if you know you want to do a different major when you begin.

If you want to major in actuarial science, economics or finance, I'd go for the specialist option. You'll save time by avoiding some of the core units. If you do Commerce Specialist/Engineering, it allows you to complete your degree without overloading in two semesters. If it was available when I graduated I probably would've gone for it (Business Law core killed my GPA :o).

Hope that helps!
vce:
2013: Further [50] (+Premier's) | Methods [48]
2014: Physics [50] | Specialist | Accounting | English Language || ATAR: 99.70 + Australian Student Prize!
uni:
2015: Bachelor of Commerce and Engineering (Honours)

So, if I wanted to graduate in 5 years in a BEng &BCom double I'd have to overload in some semesters? Don't think I could handle it tbh.

(Sorry for thread hijack).

Ooh that is a pretty big significance alright being able to bypass a few core units in Commerce rather than having to do all six (I know I'd probably struggle in at least one area of Commerce LOL) though I also don't want to restrict myself as such in case something comes up but I reckon I should be fine with it (I'll just follow it up on the 16th at Monash and probably research it a bit more LOL) :)
Thanks again Zealous!
