Hello,

I'm thinking of trying for the UMAT (just in case), but there are quite a number of things that's being an obstacle. For example, the fee for registration is ridiculously expensive (in my opinion) and then I'll need to make a driver's license just for the identification thingy which will also take up time and money.

I know most of the people try for the UMAT in year 12, but is it possible to do it in uni? Will that put me into any disadvantages?

I'm not sure whether taking the UMAT is necessary for getting into biomedicine courses after high school (at monash or melbourne) or are there any other pathways for getting into these courses without UMAT?

I'm really confused right now. I guess if I have to take it, I will just take it but I just wanted more information about this.

Thanks! :)

You don't need the UMAT to get into undergrad biomedicine courses. If you want to move to undergrad Med during your undergrad biomed degree instead of postgrad, you have to take the UMAT in uni ( because you can't really 'transfer' to med and I know people that did the umat at uni).

I'm sorry, but what's
undergrad med, undergrad biomed and postgrad?
They sound so similar and I can't tell the difference xD

I checked out their booklet thing, and they said UMAT is only relevent to a number of universities. And it doesn't have UniMelb as one of their university that looks at UMAT scores... Does that mean I don't need to take the UMAT (ever) if I want to do biomedicine/medicine at melbourne uni?

Sorry :-[

1. Undergraduate-entry medicine: a medical degree you enter after year 12 (eg. Monash MBBS(Hons)), in most cases you need to do the UMAT and an interview to get into these (in addition to ATAR)
2. Graduate-entry (or sometimes improperly termed 'postgraduate-entry') medicine: a medical degree you enter after completing a non-medical undergraduate degree (eg. UoM MD), in most cases you need to do the GAMSAT and an interview to get into these (in addition to your uni results and potentially some pre-req subjects)
3. Undergraduate biomedicine (UoM) or biomedical science (Monash): degrees you enter after year 12 that can be ideal pathways for graduate-entry, they are similar to science degrees, only your ATAR is needed to get into these

Also regarding your L's, I recommend you just get it. It's a very simple test and it's good to have some ID once you start going to parties at 18+ venues.

Ah, I understand this better now.
For option 3 (after year 12, I take a biomedicne course at unimelb), when I finish the course and want to study Medicine, would I need to take the GAMSAT or the UMAT?

Also, in your opinion, what do you think is a better option to be studying medicine as soon as possible:
1. Do biomed undergrad at unimelb (after year 12) and then do Medicine
2. Take the UMAT and studying Medicine (after taking interviews and stuff)

someone like pi will probably better answer this, but general consensus is:

Undergrad: Takes ~2 yrs less, but VERY competitive
Postgraduate: Longer, less competitive, more time to explode science

GAMSAT if you wanna do medicine after graduating (but if you want to transfer to like UNSW Med after your first year at uni, you can do the UMAT in first year and see if you get in)

I think going to Unimelb is good if you arent really sure if you want to do medicine and just want more time to expose yourself to other areas. But if you are dead set on medicine then sooner is better than later.

Postgraduate: Longer, less competitive, more time to explode science

Post-grad entry is becoming very competitive as well (the cut-offs are increasing every year)

Might just mention Apink! that the "U" in UMAT stands for undergraduate, and the "G" in GAMSAT stands for graduate, if that helps you remember haha  8)

The general idea is to do medicine at the first uni that accepts you. So if I were you, you should do the UMAT next year and try fro Monash and other undergrad med courses around Australia. If you don't get in there, then look to graduate-entry medical pathways. There's no need to do three years of Biomed if you can get into undergraduate med, I'd assume that the bulk of people going for graduate-entry pathways wouldn't be there if they could get into undergraduate med.
