Melbourne Commerce

The minimum ATAR for this course is 93 and the clearly-in is 95. I got an ATAR of 93.15. Now I was wondering, has anyone gotten into Melbourne Commerce with around a 93 ATAR? I have SEAS for catergory 1 but that can only take me so far :/ Also considering doing BA first in Melbourne and then transferring into Commerce mid-semester. Does anyone have any experience with that as well? And how hard exactly would it be to maintain an average of 75% at melb uni?  Would love to hear some comforting stories :(

Uh, this guy in my school got an ATAR of 89 and got into melbourne commerce. This was in 2013. Not to sure how he got in though (our school is underrepresented if that helps).

One guy here, SpecialAtSpecialist, has a pretty inspiring story written somewhere. You should search it up.

Keep putting Melb commerce as your first preference, you might get an offer after 1st round. I think you're better off going to Monash to do commerce for sem 1 then try an external transfer which might be difficult mid semester so i understand why you might want to do B.A at melbourne. But keep in mind if you do commerce at another uni, you'll get most of the subjects credited and when you successfully transfer to Melbourne you won't have to repeat them again.

The only thing about Monash is the fact that I live very far away from it (2.5 hours by public transport to campus). Also, if I do BA at Melbourne, can't I take Economics and have some subjects credited for commerce? or is economics in BA different to what it is in Commerce?

You mentioned falling under SEAS category 1. If you don't mind my asking, what specifically is the cause of this?

If you go to a school in a rural area you may be eligible for guaranteed entry through the Access Melbourne pathway (in which case you only need an 88). In a similar vein, I'm pretty sure you can also get this for recognition as an Aboriginal student (dunno if this is relevant to you).

Agreed with others in saying definitely keep it as your first preference. The clearly-in ATAR scores are prone to change, and you might get in without SEAS at all.

From my SEAS Receipt from VTAC - 'I want to be considered for schemes relating to age, school, living location, gender,
indigenous status, first in family to attend university, and/or non-English speaking background.' Mostly to do with the non-English speaking background. However, I don't think this application would add much of a weight. Nothing to do with stuff like indigenous status or living location as that is not relevant to me.

I will keep Commerce as my first pref, and thinking of doing Arts as my second pref and hoping to transfer. I just can't see myself going to Monash even though I would love to, the travel times are just crazy for me. Let's hope for the best.

Put melb comm first pref and melb arts second pref people transfer from arts to comm all the time just aim for over a 75+ average then switch across.

I disagree.  A 75 average isn't that attainable for everyone. Why go into Arts and risk taking subjects you don't enjoy/are not good at and then end up getting marks lower than you would if you just started doing Commerce elsewhere? Seems like a pretty big risk to me, unless you would be equally as happen to do Arts and major in Economics or something.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious here like that it's much easier to transfer internally?

I think that if op wants to major in economics, then he should transfer internally from Arts to Commerce. I also agree with Alter though. A 75 average is quite hard to maintain, especially when you're a first year student and completing your first semester, and you are completing subjects which you dislike. However, it is doable. I know many science students who completed an Arts core as their breadth and scored a H1/H2A overall despite there being a general limit on the amount of H1s that are given out (applies to some Arts subjects if I'm not mistaken?) So if you want to major in Economics I suggest you do it in Arts and then transfer, otherwise, do it at another uni to get some subjects credited and save time.

It's possible for me to do Economics as I do have an interest and is definitely not a subject that I do not like. I also have an interest in Psychology which is also available in Arts. However the only concern is not having done Eco in VCE. Is that a disadvantage? I mean, I'm a fairly quick learner and would be able to learn the basic principles quite easily.

That's good to hear, then. I guess it's important to ask yourself whether or not you'd be prepared to continue on with Arts if you found out it wasn't immediately possible to transfer. If it is, then I'd agree with putting it as your next preference, keeping in mind that you should definitely not move Commerce down. Had you given thought to doing Arts before?

Best wishes.

would you happen to know what the cut-off for commerce is likely to be this year?

In a similar position to you but considering doing science instead of arts
