Hi everyone!

I'm Nicholas Liu, a graduate of Scotch College in 2013 who has been tutoring for over a year now (if you're wondering why not two years, I've been on exchange for a semester). I am currently studying a Bachelor of Science under the Chancellor's Scholars Program at the University of Melbourne. Because of my interest in science and my willingness to help other students, I am offering tuition in Specialist Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, Physics and Chemistry in 2016 for units 3/4.

Credentials

I have tutored the above subjects for over a year now and understand that different students pick up concepts at different rates. Therefore, I have experience with tutoring a variety of students from relatively strong to not so strong.
I graduated in 2013 from Scotch College with an ATAR of 99.95. My study scores are below.

2013:
English Language 50
Chemistry 50
Specialist Mathematics 49
Physics 49
UMEP Physics 96 -> 5.0 increment

2012:
Mathematical Methods 50
Chinese (SL) 45

Other awards:
Excellence awards for Accelerated Mathematics 1 and UMEP Physics at the University of Melbourne
Co-dux of year 12, dux of year 11
3rd prize in the Melbourne University Maths Competition 2010-2012
Gold medal in the Australian Chemistry Olympiad 2012

I also have had a Working with Children Check ever since the end of 2013.

Tutoring philosophy
I strongly believe that understanding is key to VCE success. It is very common for students to parrot formulas without understanding what they mean and where/how to use them. In addition, many concepts in VCE are not explained fully by teachers. Therefore, my main objective is to instil the fundamentals in students that are not often covered in class. I will ensure that students understand what they learn fully, from the origin of what they are learning to its meaning and applications, which will greatly assist in retention of knowledge. In addition, I have a wide interest in science and maths and I will do my best to make studying VCE science a much smaller burden on students by developing an interest in science in them. This way, my students will be inspired to study the material on their own, at a higher efficiency. It is through becoming interested in my learning that I was able to self-learn Mathematical Methods and Specialist Maths before the start of year 11 and I believe, with the right guidance, that any student is capable of similar feats.

Also, as a university student, I detest long waits for reply emails from professors, so I will endeavour to answer at least one question from each student every day, regardless of how busy I am. This way, I can ensure that my students feel supported in and out of lessons.

Cost, location, other details
I am charging $40/hr for individual lessons. Group lesson rates can be negotiated, although I am looking at around $30/hr.
I am available for tutoring at the State Library during the week, but I can tutor at the Camberwell or Ashburton libraries on the weekend. If you are interested, please send a message or email me at [email protected]

I look forward to meeting you!
