what is so special about Bachelor of Biomed(scholars) @Monash??

I have been offered a spot in the Biomed Scholars program @ Monash. I see that the clearly in is 99.05 for this course but the structure and fees are identical to the normal program. I am an international student and I am trying to find the best deal :P as everything is so frikking expensive. Is this course cheaper and what does the 'scholars' stand for as I have been awarded a decent scholarship from monash already and I want to wait for Med in the main round of offers #fingersCrossed  :)

There must be something that separates the 'scholars' from the normal course. Called Monash and they were unhelpful :(

which provides a range of extracurricular opportunities to engage with research staff
and the advanced technical facilities used for research."

So it is for those that want to pursue research in Biomedicine. Such a blurred program haha. Thanks for your time though :)

Legit, not only for Monash but for a LOT of other unis, when they have some "special" variant of a degree (such as "Advanced xx" or "xx (Scholars)"), it is simply a fancy sounding degree. Not much more to it.

Having said that, I don't know how international offers work, but usually early offers can be accepted, and this won't eliminate your chance at still getting a main offer. It is worth ringing up VTAC/Monash to double check this, but I think your best bet is to accept this course while you can, and hopefully get an offer for med in the main round which you can then take and unenrol from biomed scholars.

Yeah I was just told the degree is just BS. the perks, for me at least ,are unnecessary  and the price is just ridiculous. I called Monash and they were really unhelpful with information stating that everything is in the offer package even after a lot of prompting. If I am to do biomed, I will go melbourne Uni. But hopefully Monash is merciful with Med later :)

If I remember correctly, the scholars program just adds research opportunity or research focus.

So it is useless to someone who wants to use biomed as a bridging degree...

It pretty much is a degree you do just for the title.

There's not too many differences between the Scholars Program and the standard biomed degree. You get to overload from first year if you want. One of the things they used to tell us was that you could technically finish the biomed degree in two years if you decided to overload, and if you had already completed an extension study, but I don't think anyone has ever done that.

You also get to be a part of the Talented Students' Program (which you can also do with Adv w/ Honours). The Talented Students' Program pretty much lets you go to these tours around biomed research faculties throughout your degree (best part about it is free food). You also can get put into a mentor group with a leading researcher, and if they're keen, they'll be willing to meet up regularly, and even conduct experiments with you.

I'd recommend doing this over the normal degree, just because it does offer some extra stuff (even if it's not much)
2012: Japanese SL
2013: English, Chemistry, Mathematical Methods, Specialist Maths, MUEP Japanese
2014-: Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Scholars Program)/Science Advanced - Research (Honours)
Extended Major in Applied Mathematics,  Minor in Mathematical Statistics

So you do get something for that 99.05 clearly in cutoff, albeit not much. Thanks for the insight though, it was really helpful given that the actual monash website does poorly to differentiate between the 2. :)
