best backpack for uni

My old backpack is thin and falling apart, so I'm interested in getting a new one with input from AN'ers :)
What backpack in your opinion would be the most suitable for uni use, I will be bringing
- Laptop and charger
- Textbooks
- Document folders
- Binders
- Calculator and pencil case
- Other bits and pieces

Oh, and I'll be riding a bike from home to the train station
Any insight or advice would be appreciated :)

My advice - don't bring/buy textbooks.

I do have a friend who places good value in one he got from JB or something, though it did cost him about $70

BUYING textbooks is avoidable.

You'll find at uni that textbooks are not used nearly as much as they are in high school.

In my uni career, I've bought two and used one.

Kathmandu Cubic (http://www.kathmandu.com.au/packs-and-bags/day-packs/cubic-pack-v4-black-1.html)
This thing is the best backpack I have ever seen by far, the build quality is superb and it is perfect for riding a bike because the chest strap is sturdy (I've ridden thousands of k's with mine)

Me, my dad and my brother all have them and not one rip, tear or zip fail has happened to any of us. Dad has the older version and has used it everyday for 10 or so years, the thing is a tank

Mine has a laptop sleeve that fit my laptop for width but wasnt long enough (it is a widescreen laptop) so maybe go in store and check to see if yours fits, but otherwise it is the perfect backpack in my opinion

I've seen lots of people use Hershels backpacks at UoM.

I have one myself and it suits all my needs although I think it can be rather pricey. Most of the designs have a laptop compartment and the bags are really sturdy

I don't think I ever brought a textbook to uni. Most can also be "found" in various dubious corners of the internet, not that I recommend it ;)

This.

My girlfriend gave me one for my birthday--they're absolutely stellar. If you're not interested in the aesthetic aspect there's probably better options, though.

Seconding.

This seems to be the backpack of choice at Monash. I've never actually used one so take this with a grain of salt, but they seem to be fairly strong and big enough to fit everything you would need.

Yeah, I have the previous version of this (v3), and it has served me particularly well. Very sturdy, well and truly big enough, and comfortable.

Hmm. Yeah. I was also shopping around for a messenger bag (because I'm cool, screw back problems) for next year. However, I'm gonna wait until we start to buy it because I could work out what I'll be carrying everyday and all that, and then work out what I should buy.

RAINS make good backpacks for $99.99, they're stylish and pretty comfortable too. They come with a 13 inch laptop sleeve too.
