So just wondering

If say I wanted to pursue masters in psych can I study bachelor of laws simultaneously ?

Does the uni (monash)  allow this or is it too much workload?

If both are full time it will be absolutely impossible. Full time means 8 (4 + 4) subjects a semester, that is so insane that you will surely be crushed. Even the most dedicated students will struggle and you will be spread incredibly thin.

IF you do both in part time mode, you can get it down to a normal 4 subjects a semester and it should be fine.

HOWEVER, I honestly doubt it will be approved. Also, to gain entry into a masters, you usually need to have finished a bachelors but some exemptions and other cases apply. Since you appear to have only just finished VCE, you've basically got no legs to stand on right now, you surely wont be allowed in your first year either.

Alternatively, try BA(Psych)/Law or BSc(Psych)/Law. It will also be a lot cheaper and more properly structured. Single law degrees are rare because its just too much law overload AND you'd be silly not to graduate with two degrees when it only costs you an extra year of your life. It really does open your eyes.

Sorry if I worded my question wrong

But what I meant is ill do a bachelor in Law and psych

And since law bachelor takes longer than psych, while I finish my bachelor in law, I pursue masters in psych to save time

So that will work out fine?

Thanks for your help!

Nope - assuming you're talking about a double degree option, when you finish the other degree, you start honours work for law. There are no electives in honours (per se), so you cannot chop units off and make room for a Masters degree. Similarly, you won't have a bunch of free time anymore, because the space that occupied your other units will now be filled by law honours units.

Even if you convinced the uni to let you do the masters degree part time with the law degree, you wouldn't dave time - in fact, if you don't plan it carefully, you might even LOSE time.

Thanks !

I talked to another member on AN and apparently you only need a bachelor in laws to and additional training at a firm to practise, so I thought there was no honours in law?

It's a part of the degree - check out the full name, they're all called Bachelor of Laws (Honours)

ok thanks

I get it now

Would this plan be possible then:

year 1, Start Major in psych,
year 2, transfer into double degree(law/art or science) whilst still studying psych major ,
fast forward to year 4, I have completed Psych major but still in bachelor of Laws (because I started it later)
year 5, undertake honors in psych and final year in bachelor of Laws
year 6, complete honours in law whilst deferring place in psych masters for one year
year 7, having completed honours in Law I now go back and finish masters in psych

thanks :)

No. You can't do an honours year and study ANOTHER degree. You'd have to defer the law part of your degree for a year.

I'm not really sure exactly how honours in law works but the bottom line is this, if you're still working on another degree, you won't have time for a masters, particularly one as involved as psychology.

I've heard of people doing things like this with very light and totally online masters (like public health by distance) but even then it's a bit dubious and rare.

Basically you need to finish all your degrees, then go and do your masters. I'm also not sure if its possible to defer places in post-grad courses. I'm not saying it isn't, i just don't know at all.
