Alternatives to Double Degrees?
« on: January 23, 2016, 03:34:28 pm »

Hey everyone,

I've been thinking of how I want to do a double degree once I start university. I would choose Melbourne Uni except as you may well know, UoM does not offer double degrees. Monash Uni does and for this reason I'm leaning towards Monash.
Are there any programs or things I could do similar to a double degree? Is there some way I could still do two degrees or would I have to finish one and then start the next?

Thanks :)

2018-22: Bachelor of Biomedical Science @ Monash Uni

You could do an undergrad, and then do a postgrad. That would mean you can do degrees from two disciplines. However, be very careful in your choices because all postgrad courses have requirements such as the completion of admissions tests (GAMSAT or LSAT), GPA/WAM hurdles and prerequisites. Here are some examples:

- My insane plan: BE (Hons)/BCom at MU --> BMBS at Deakin
- Standard Med/Dent plan: BBioMed or BSc at MU/UoM --> MD/DDS
- Standard Law plan: BCom or BA or BSc --> JD

The combinations go on. Any chance of you specifying what you want to do exactly? You could do a double degree at Monash, and then apply for a postgrad course. Engineering and Science would be great for that, because you use the science degree to fulfill your prerequisites.

If you wanted to study commerce and engineering at UoM, you could go BCom with an engineering major and then still be eligible to complete a ME. Haven't really looked at any other combinations like this though.

Maybe an engineering/science, engineering/law or engineering/arts...not 100% sure yet.
Hmm yeah doing a double degree at Monash and then transferring to Melbourne is a good idea, but is there any way I could do it only at Melbourne? :-\

I guess the closest thing Melbourne has to a double degree is the Concurrent Diploma. You can take one up during your undergraduate degree but they are only a few different types that are available. http://students.unimelb.edu.au/achieve/concurrent-diplomas has more information. The diploma has 100 credit points (unlike bachelor degrees which have 300) and you can cross-credit up to 50 points, so in many cases you'll be doing 4 extra subjects for the diploma if you plan carefully.

But if you are really after a double degree, Monash is the place to be. As someone doing a diploma at the moment, it just feels like I'm doing a slight extension to my undergraduate degree and probably not too similar to the double degree experience.

As you know you can't do double degrees at UoM. You could do an undergrad like BCom, and then do two postgrads? There is double masters at UoM which lets you do JD and an MBA in 4 years. But MBAs are kinda useless, so yeah. I think your best bet is to do a double at Monash and take up post grad study.

By the way, it isn't a transfer as you are finishing your current degree, and not ditching it.

In short. Do you want to study 3 things?

you can do an arts degree at melbouren with the accredited engineering breadth sequence as your breadth and if you still wanna do engineering after the first 3 years of the BA you can do the 2 year masters in engineering.
basically at melbourne instead of having 5 year double degrees they have 3 year bachelors + 2 year masters if you wanna do 2 things.
if you want eng/science then you can just do science at melbourne and do postgrad engineering as well. with the eng/law you would have to do a bachelors degree (probably science) with an engineering major and law electives and then see which one you like more and do that for post grad after the first 3 years. or if youre a really keen been you could do 3 year bachelors + 2 year masters eng + 2/3 year JD. the first 2 combinations with an arts/science undergrad and post grad engineering will mean you actually graduate as a qualified engineer quicker than at monash (monash takes 5.5 years iirc) and you have a masters in engineering rather than just a bachelors + the chance to exit early after finishing your 3 years bachelors if you decide you dont wanna do eng

You can sort of do an double degree at Melbourne. After you finish your degree you just have to apply through VTAC and get into the other degree you want to do. This means you would need to be selective with what breadths you would need to chose also for the 100points you can transfer. I was planning to do this as an emergency plan to do a bach of science (maths major) in 2 years and then get into a masters course related to actuary.
