Hellooo !

So i was just wondering for the module A essay (Mines Richard III) should the comparisons between the two texts be around the same length? or should you write more about one than the other. Because most of my comparative paragraphs are around the same length but the ones that focus on the play, shakespeare, i only have 1 quote and i don't know if thats enough.

Thankyou so much !! :)

Hi elenaa!!

I am also doing Richard III and Looking For Richard. My teacher told us that while similar emphasis should be put on both the texts, to always start with the parent text first (KR3) and then move on to the adaptation (LFR).

I personally would have more than one quote for "the ones that focus on the play shakespeare"

Module A's keywords are INTEGRATION and CONTEXT. It does not ask for a personal response like Module B does, but as Module A is a comparative study of texts, you have to both compare and contrast both texts in regard to context. What has changed in 400+ years? What has been included/excluded? What does that tell us about KR3/LFR? Its all about those links (Sorry Meghan its not all about that bass ;D)

Example: Similarity- Women are largely absent from both texts (one could argue that there are even less women in Pacino's version though)
Difference- the way Richard is killed in the final battle. In Pacino's he is shot by an unnamed archer. Richmond just finishes the job. (Another difference: where is Richmond's grand speech in Pacino's? Absent because LFR is so richard-centric)
(Similarly mod b is textual integrity and Mod C representation)

Hope I have actually answered your question/s and not just danced around them! :D
Welcome to atarnotes and be sure to pm or ask further question if anything needs clarifying!

Hey!
I had my Paper 1 trials today but I wanted to ask a quick question.
Even if I have memorised general essays to be weaved into the question of the day, how do you kind of know what to write quickly while sufficiently answering the question, not just placing the words in. My teacher expects our essays in tests to be of the same standard as assignments, with the same level of sophistication
I am doing Paper 2 tomorrow and I just want to know how I can not go blank in the question or how to structure my essay to be applicable to any question
Thank you!!

Hey Justina!

For starters, I think your teachers expectations are unreasonable, and you can tell them some random guy on the internet said so  ;) it is impossible for the same student to write as well under exam conditions as they do at home, having hours to hone and prepare the piece. It's just not a thing, so don't stress long term, because HSC Markers would never expect that  :)

I think the trick to responding to the question effectively is to have had practice answering similar questions. Tonight, you should go over a few Paper 2's, look at the question, and do a bit of brainstorming. How would you answer that question? Given the benefit of time, how would you structure the response? What sorts of concepts would you discuss? Devoting some time tonight familiarising yourself with potential questions will work wonders I think ;D

Beyond that, the trick is in a good Thesis. In your first few sentences, make your answer to the question extremely obvious. Re-use the wording if you have to, just leave no doubt in the markers mind that you are answering the question.

Remember you can frame the question any way you choose, make it suit what YOU want to talk about. Terms like ambition, connection, human nature, etc: All very broad terms. You can make questions like that work for you rather than against you.

A lot of students rush their Thesis, but give it some time and dedication: If you set it up well you can make the question work for what you've prepared. Essentially, it becomes not an exercise of manipulating your prepared structure, but manipulating your Thesis so that the structure of the rest of the essay can remain untouched ;D

Be sure to rework your introductions and conclusions to directly answer the question, and make links to the question obvious throughout the analysis, you'll need to adjust on the fly to really hit your marks  :) I hope this helps, good luck!!

Thats okay!! :)
I dont know how else to say this so it might come across blunt but you are likely to forget some of that 1200 words in the exam room. Quotes are essential to the Modules and you could be seriously hurting your marks to exclude them :(

I would recommend cutting out any digressions, retelling or any information that doesnt add anything to the essay (this can still be great info, just not succinct enough to add depth to your response in 40 minutes)

Make sense? Hope so :D feel free to flick me a pm or reply on here for any questions, queries, comments or any general feedback/clarification

Good luck tomorrow im sure youll do really well!! (Find solace in the fact that youll beat me at least :P)

Love your work study buddy ;D will offer the suggestion that textual retell is the first thing you should cut. Any words spent telling the marker what happened in the text is wasted words, because the marker has read your text and knows it well :) if it doesn't present an idea of your own (analysis or concept), then it may be worth a trim, if not now then for the HSC!!  ;D good luck to you both for Paper 2 tomorrow! Be confident  ;D

Sob into your sleeve rather than into the air :)

But seriously - keep an eye on the time and be disciplined. It's better to have three uncompleted essays than one completed and two not even started!

So my english yearlies are coming up within approximately 3-5 weeks and I need to start preparing essays by next week (this week I'll need to reread and re-analyse my texts in order to ensure I am 100% familiar with them with my own "special analysis")

For the AOS, I have an idea of what I am going to talk about. For Module A, I was thinking of talking about historical, cultural and social contexts in my essay and have no idea of what else I need to talk about. Could someone please give me an idea of what I need to talk about?

For Module B, I've looked into my text but not so much my essay and I need to get a much broader understanding of what I'll need to talk about in my essay

Does anyone here have any ideas of what I should/need to talk about in my Module A and Module B essays?

Thanks

Hey conic!  ;D Just to clarify, you are doing Year 11 Yearlies, so your teacher would have crafted your electives for you. Are they based around Module A and Module B for the HSC Course?
