Hey,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I was wondering if any of you could look over my rough essay plan for the discovery module?

This is the question I'm centralising my draft around -
While a discovery may be carefully planned, it is the impacts that are unexpected.
Discuss this statement with reference to TWO texts set for study.

Thesis - unexpected ramifications often ensue even the most planned of discoveries
Body 1; The Rabbits - Unexpected impacts can initiate an individual's self-assessment/introspection of pre-existing ways of thinking, leading to potentially new values and perspectives.
Body 2; Brides of Christ - Unexpected discoveries can provoke acts of moral/religious transgression, drawing on behaviours that are uncommon to an individual.
Body 3; The Rabbits - Planned discoveries can lead to unexpected long term destruction/disruption in a personal, spiritual and emotional context, resulting in irreparable relational discord between the community
Body 4; Brides of Christ - Unexpected discoveries regarding the desire of hegemonic powers to suppress personal autonomy can force an individual to exercise their internal strength (?) trying to convey the message "you never realise how strong you are until being strong is your only choice", but not sure if I'm articulating that idea into words accurately enough haha

I hope this isn't too much to ask, thankyou so much! :)

Does anyone know where I can find resources for 'The Awakening' by Kate Chopin?

I literally feel like my school is one of the few who chooses this as the prescribed text.

While this is not specifically related to discovery, it looks like quite an in-depth resource to have :)

This looks like a very solid plan, I had a very similar layout to yours as well. Your first three concepts are concise, clear, and can be linked to the thesis which is great. Your last concept is a bit convoluted though - even though the idea ("you never realise how strong you are until being strong is your only choice") makes sense, it may hinder your ability to delve into aspects of discoveries since its so specific. Personally, I would take an approach like "Discoveries have the potential to provide insight into one's state of self-understanding, which may have been previously distorted" or something along those lines. So far so good, seem to be prepared well (so early too!)

Haha yeah my teacher wants a full draft tomorrow, and I haven't even started writing yet lol. Thankyou for the response though, your insight is really helpful! :) And I agree, I was the most unsure of the last one, but I feel like they all bleed into eachother somehow and it's hard to keep the topic sentences obviously distinct you know? Like, it's really easy to divert away from the central focus, then suddenly come to the epiphany that you've been inadvertently talking about another paragraph's topic hahaha. Ugh the struggles of English

Hello :D
so we have a task in which we need to make a book cover, illustrating our AOS and ORT, whilst talking about 'ramifications of discovery' whilst justifying the elements on our cover

what would be the best way to present all these ideas, with the right balance of justifying elements, techniques, explaining the ramifications of discovery, and what the text is about?

thank you

Hey there! It depends on what your texts are and what the main ideas are that you want to explore. In my head, using colours and sizes works really well. I'm imagining a windy road running through the middle of the book from bottom to top, and the top it gets thinner for perspective. Then I'd illustrate it with different things along the way to kind of illustrate a journey. Maybe different stalls with different goods for sale? Maybe different looking people - lovely people and nasty people?

I'm not sure if this is making any sense to you because I know my ideas can be a bit wild, but that's what I'm imagining. :)

Hey! I used to organise my notes in big tables - Quotes, techniques and explanations I could use in my essays.

This guide might be worth a read, it breaks down the sorts of ways you can study for Advanced! :)

Hey, I got my feedback for my Discovery essay today from my teacher and she seems to prefer the approach of being specific to your text in the topic sentences of the paragraphs, because she made that suggestion on all my general topic sentences. However, I've been told multiple times that this is not ideal and that it is better to start with the general concept first and THEN hone into the specifics of the text. What are your thoughts?

I was taught that to be speciffic in the topic sentence it too "concrete" and that it is preferred that topic sentences are more conceptual

It's tricky. I recommend, and I constructed myself, thesis statements/topic sentences that were about the concept, not the text. But there is no one only way to write topic sentences that work. I think the main thing to remember is that the focus of your essay doesn't get shifted to the texts, with discovery as an after thought. If your teacher prefers texts in the topic sentences, then I'd play to their rules if they're marking you. I don't think it matters too much (in saying this - I'm loosening up on how I look at thesis statements, my views are changing), as long as it doesn't set the tone of your entire essay to put discovery as a back burning idea, then I think you'll be fine :)
