Any tips on memorising essays for the hsc?

Do you have to have read all of your texts to do well?

Here is Elyse's article on memorising english essays http://atarnotes.com/memorising-english-essays/

As for reading your texts to do well, if you don't read your texts you're more than likely not going to know what's going on in your essay. You can use google as a substitute but I don't think there's another substitute for actually reading your texts

This is an interesting one! So the thing here is that the markers like a variety of techniques, showing that you can consider different representational approaches. Like, someone can have great ideas, but if they go the typical 'symbolism' all the time then the marker is less impressed. Now this variety can be made easier by using two texts of different mediums; film and novel, novel and poem, poem and documentary, etc. However, this is secondary to choosing a related text that works for the module, and works with how you want to analyse your prescribed text.

If you can get the variety of techniques with two novels, then go for it, that's awesome. You can even draw some cool parallels on how two texts of identical mediums and themes approach the idea differently. If you want two different mediums to make it easier to get some variety, go for that! Much a personal preference on this one :)

Ok thanks! I've checked all the past Mod C Q's and they've only ever asked for one related text sooo it could be ok... but then again you never know, this just might be the year it changes!

If most people have only 1 related text for Mod C and in the HSC exam, they ask for 2, then people are obviously going to start complaining to the BOSTES so obviously they can't make you do 2, given that most people have 1 related text

This is true!! I'd wager against it though, they'd see marks plummet across the board (two related texts is not easy), worst you'd be likely to see is AT LEAST one, and even then, you just do one ;)

I hope you are right 😂I just found 2 speeches that I really liked and they are so much quicker to analyse than say, a movie... and at this point I'm running out of time!

If you're not sure which speech then go and do something like Piggybook or Harrison Bergeron

hey Karen! Lots of people study Wag the Dog - have a flick through the essay marking forum here and have a browse through what other people have chosen. I didn't study this one myself, nor the module (I did landscapes) so I can't offer much personal insight. V for Vendetta seems to be a good people and politics text, based on what I've marked!

I was also wondering about opinions on using songs as related texts (in this case for mod C people and landscapes)... At school, my teachers advise against it but if the lyrics have textual integrity and there are lots of musical devices to support my points, is there anything wrong with doing a song?

I've seen this around a bit! I don't think I have an opinion either way :P it would be much harder to get the required depth out of a song (primarily the form of literary techniques and concepts), but if you can, then I don't see why not!! ;D

Ok, thanks! I've already analysed the song but I feel like I could maybe get more out of a different text... I might prepare another one just in case

You can always get feedback on the song in an essay from one of our essay marking threads!! That might give you an indicator ;D
