 Can you do three subjects in year 12 and not do four subjects?

You need a minimum of 4 subjects to get an ATAR (I think). Although, I don't know if this is a thing at other schools but in recent years, my school has permitted students to extend their year 12, effectively completing three 3/4 subjects in one year and another three the following year to thereby decrease their workload and their stress.
