When can I go on overseas holiday after exam?
« on: July 18, 2016, 12:25:23 am »

Hi guys,

I am planning to go overseas and spend a holiday there. Im finishing Year 12 VCE this yr n I know I needa sort out all that VTAC n uni offers stuff so Im just wondering if I have to stay in Australia to sort out all those applications? My frd in uni said I can go overseas after get my atar cuz they do all the application stuff online nowadays

And when do uni applications usually conclude? Like when is the earliest that I get to leave this country for a holiday without having my uni applications affected?

Thx all xoxo

Hi SONE0413, welcome to ATARNotes and thanks for posting your question on here :)

To start, i've moved your thread to VTAC Discussion, given your question is primarily about uni course applications.

Secondly, you will find a list of dates for the VTAC course preference/release process here: http://vtac.edu.au/dates.html

Applications for uni courses opens on 1 Aug 2016 at 9am, and close on the 29th September at 5pm. You can submit a list of preferences (courses you want to be considered for) during this period. This is all done online using the VTAC system, so there's that!

Your friend is correct - you can basically go overseas as soon as you complete all of your exams. Just make sure you have internet access whilst you're overseas, and make sure you check your email / VTAC account every so often.

Some dates that i'll highlight for you:
12 December 7am - You get your ATAR! (via SMS if you register or online using resultsandatar).
20 December noon - VTAC (course preference) change of preference closes - this means you basically have 8 days from when you get your ATAR to rearrange your preferences, add some, delete some and so on (you might do this for a variety of reasons - e.g. unexpected ATAR, personal preference)
18 January 2017 2pm - your Round 1 uni offers come out via your VTAC account and sent to your email.

Just a few other things to think about:

- You may need to attend an enrolment session when you get your uni offer (some unis like to do this). You can nominate someone else to go if you have a relative in Australia when you're overseas.
- The uni semester starts around the last week of February or the first week of March. Ideally I reckon you should be back around mid February at the latest.

All the best.

Aren't there also like interviews for some courses? No idea when those happen but you might have to take that into consideration.

And just something that you may want to take into consideration: most schools have a valedictorian dinner (or some equivalent with a different name) and I've been told that they're a big deal (not sure if that's just at my school or what). So you may want to check when that happens if you plan on going cuz I know a lot of schools time them for after ATARs come out. Last year, a couple of the Year 12's at my school left the country the day after their last exam to go on holiday and they ended up flying back from like Europe/Asia/wherever just for Val (and then flying back to their holiday destinations to resume their holiday)... #crazy

Yeah, it might depend on your particular circumstances (events with your school, interviews for potential courses, and so on). But otherwise, Aaron's post is a very valuable one. It should be fine so long as you check all of the relevant dates. Perhaps even ask somebody at your school (VCE Co-ordinator or something?) just to make sure.

I had no interest in going on Schoolies, so went to Taiwan pretty soon after my final exam. I did a lot of the VTAC stuff overseas (including accepting my course offer, enrolling and the like). As Aaron notes, WiFi is pretty important. Otherwise, you can get a proxy to do some of the things on your behalf.

tl;dr: It should be fine so long as you're sufficiently organised. :)

Yep you do most of it online (unless the uni forces you to attend an enrolment session - but like I said, you can nominate someone to go on your behalf).

WARNING: Some enrolment stuff requires your presence (for example, the global challenges degree at Monash has a compulsory camp). Make sure to look into this before making holiday plans!

Definitely listen and read the above posts. Certainly double check whether you need to do anything special.

Aren't there also like interviews for some courses? No idea when those happen but you might have to take that into consideration.
Can confirm. I had an interview the Monday I came back from Schoolies (early December). Some run right through 'til mid-December, so be extra cautious if you plan to pursue one of these sorts of courses.

Note to any 2016/ future Year 12s: Interviews can range from October to mid/late-December. If you do want an interview-requiring course, make sure you put this preference down regardless of it being Preference 1 or 12 and get one first! If you are not sure whether you want X preference by the end of September and it requires an interview, put it down anyway. (You can always change it or decline the offer later.) You never know whether that will become one of your final preferences.

According to Monash's website, neither Nutrition Science nor Geographical Science (I assume a Geographical Science major under a Science degree - I couldn't find a specific geographical science degree) need an interview. One point to note would be that the Nutrition Science degree will require a Working with Children Check to finish the course, which will likely be notified upon enrolment or during the degree.
