VTAC Course Preferences 2016 - Questions

NOTE: This thread is an archive of questions/discussion from mid-2016 to early December, 2016. Please see the last post in this thread for the new link to post your post-ATAR queries. Thanks, Aaron.

VTAC Course Applications 2016 - Ask your questions here!

VTAC Course Applications open from TOMORROW (1st of August, 2016)

By now you would have (or are going to sometime in the next few weeks) sat down with the designated career advisor(s) at your school to discuss potential courses for next year. We're lucky on ATARNotes that we've got a whole bunch of university students that have been in the exact same position as you are in right now (course preferences), who can answer all of your questions.

This thread serves as a Q&A thread for current Year 12 students who may need that extra bit of help figuring out the ins and outs of the VTAC Process. Please ask us if you have questions, it's important that you get it right (so you end up in the correct course!)

Helpful Links to get you started:

Remember:
- If you're a citizen or permanent resident, you should be choosing course preferences that have course codes ending in a 1. This means you are applying for a CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place), and as a result, you'll be entitled to defer your student contribution via the HECS-HELP system.
- Preferences are not final and you'll be able to change them even after you've received your ATAR. Check the VTAC Key Dates for change of preference periods.
- Choose the course(s) that you want to get into in order of desire, rather than probability. See Preference system explained

Depends on the category you're applying for. You'll have to be a bit more convincing than that :P

Some more info for you to look at: http://www.vtac.edu.au/who/seas.html

You apply for them through VTAC.

By the way, there is a thread here dedicated to course preferences and so on :) I've merged your topics with this one so we can keep the board clean :)

Which uni courses generally require interview?
Like medicine? Am I right?

N it would say at the course info webpage on the uni website if interview is required or not right??! Like if i go to the arts webpage n if the additional requirement doesnt indicate interview then there isnt one needed right? xoxo

Hey, the one I definitely know for sure about is medicine
Also, yes they will/should say it, and they will also most likely say how much it is worth as compared to your atar :)

There are plenty of different degrees that require an interview. Undergraduate medicine typically requires an interview (most notably, Monash), but other degrees such as Physiotherapy (Monash) and even Bachelor of Science Advanced - Global Challenges (again, Monash) also require interviews.

Not too familiar with other universities but like you've correctly stated, the course requirements/information page of any degree should specify whether an interview is required or not.

Hope that helps :)

It's under category 1 SONE :) Feel free to have a look at this link, that tells you what unis take these things into account (and more importantly, which ones don't):

http://www.vtac.edu.au/who/seas/categories.html

Judging by this, only Fed Uni will take 'first in family' into consideration as part of SEAS.

Great to hear you'll be the first one to attend (I too was the first in my family to go to university!)

I don't think you count as being the "first in fam to attend uni" if your Dad attended uni.

Hi! I hope I'm posting this in the right place
I'm in my first year of a bachelors degree and am wanting to do a different bachelor course at a different uni. I called the uni im interested in and they told me that once my current uni gives me my yearly results at the end of the year, I need to submit transcripts to VTAC. Will VTAC accept my transcripts so late into the year? Also, do I need to submit transcripts of my current results of the first semester during the application process?
One last question: I meet the prerequisites for the course Im interested in based on my VCE science unit results completed last year and University English results from this year. Does VTAC send both my uni results and my VCE results to the prospective uni? thanks
