I was so happy to see that the techniques you posted for the short answers were the EXACT same ones I mentioned in my responses! (E.g. Enjambment, ellipsis, imagery, etc.)

As a Standard English student, I found the exam pretty good!

I followed the recommended time for every section.

- Short answers I found were pretty decent (I've never seen a 4 mark short answer question before though xD)
- The creative piece is the only piece of text that I memorised for this whole English course (I improvise my essays), and was super pleased to see that my creative writing fit perfectly with one of the images (The guy sitting alone holding an umbrella with the storm above him)
- The essay question this year was easier to understand than the 2015 essay question (IMO). However, I was super anxious that I might run out of time for this essay because I was hoping to leave more time for this section (I ended up following the 40 minute recommendation), so I left out a quote on my RT, and therefore, had to change my essay structure a little bit :P

Ultimately, I did pretty good :')

Yay! So glad to hear it. There are so many ways to approach the unseen texts but I'm glad we were on a similar wave length! :)

Just going to leave a general gist of what I wrote for each short answer question - would like some feedback on it to calm my nerves though! All the quotes are from memory, sorry!

a) It was 2 marks and I was unsure if I needed 2 techniques so I went with 1 technique and tried to elaborate on my explanation. I used the accumulation (I think this is the quote) "Walking was free, it felt good...something about seeing the city in a different way that wouldn't be possible any way else" and linked to how pleasure comes from being able to renew their perceptions of the city

b) I used the accumulation "lines...boxes...no pictures" to discuss about how the unexpected discovery is foreshadowed in how the possibilities within the museum is undermined in comparison to the spontaneous discovery of the whale which is evoked by a sense of the child's curiosity. Then I used the simile which included the something about phosphorescence to discuss about how the child contrasts himself to the immensity of the whale which enables him to gain perspective of how insignificant he is in such a big world...

c) Used the alliteration (because I had no idea what to do) "Saturn's spinning rings" to say how the imagery creates a sense of wonder because its linked to how the universe is so vast and full of endless possibilities and discoveries...
Used the simile which involved the name sounding like charms and how charms is connotated with something magical like an enchantment. Used the exclamation in the dialogue "Six thousand something something!" to say how it creates an atmosphere of excitement which is the reaction of the boy to the wonders of discovery

d) Used all the quotes I used in Text 2 (Child & museum) but brushed it up a little to sound like an essay. I used the rhetorical question to say how it indicates the shift in the individual's perception of the world and her discovery of the butterflies being revealed here. Used the descriptive imagery of the fire and what not to display the beauty of the environment surrounding her which she has discovered. Forgot what other bullshit I had to pull for this one LOL

CREATIVE: Used the stimulus with the man in the snowy location with lights (I used this for the lights to be honest because there is significance of lights in my creative...but I didn't relate to the ice and the isolation)

ESSAY: I kind of felt iffy here - my prepared essays surrounded the insights catalysed by the rediscovery of artefacts & the renewing of our perceptions by reassessing the validity of these sources of discovery - but I chose to say my texts (Frank Hurley & The Age of Lead) showed it but it lacked examination and continued with my own points

I was thinking to myself before the exam started I would go for a walk once I got home... That never happened.

Then I thought during the exam it would be a good idea to say "there was a contrast between the whale and the boat as a boat is not a whale"...
What a start to the HSC

How important are conclusions? I didn't get mine on. I think I wrote: "ultimately, discoveries..." and then ran out of time!  :P

Hahahaha seriously don't sweat it mate, it definitely doesn't sound as bad as you think. Judging from your username English isn't your favourite subject, so just focus on getting through tomorrow and then being able to kick back and watch your notes burn  :)  :)

In the grand scheme of things, not that important. Don't worry about it now! You finished the bulk of your essay where you actually get your marks so be proud of that  :)

They're going to be able to tell that you ran out of time. And whilst the conclusion counts it doesn't count massively. It'll still work out; you're not going to be hit hard by it especially if your essay itself was pretty solid

haha, at least you didn't say "the final line within the poem, which likens the night sky to braille text, demonstrates the effective use of imagery, as even blind people can visual it" ... omg. what was I even thinking haha. That's what happens when you only have 2 mins left to finish a question :)

Other than that though I felt the exam went well actually :) The essay question was very similar to one that I had already memorised from a previous assessment, and I managed to make my creative fit the stimulus - though I do think it was stupid that you had to have one of the images as a key location within your narrative when literally every single one was a desert :/

Annoyed that there wasn't a visual text in the comprehension as well, but overall, I thought that was a pretty fair exam.

hahaha, laugh away, I am too! Nothing that can be done about it now haha, and in the grand scheme of things I don't think that its going to affect me that much when it was only a 4 mark question, and some of the other stuff I wrote was fine.

Heres what i wrote;

I wrote tonnes of techniques and quotes but cant remember specifically

a) pleasurable discovery -

Knowledge of the new
his auditory and visual imagery highlighting the new things he discovered
I cant really remember what i wrote but i know it was about a positive discovery

b) contrast

I contrasted the discovery of the adult and the child indicating that the child was more open minded, whereas the adult was not surprised about the discovery. This highlights how discovery is a unique experience for everyone. It also reinforces that discovery can offer new insights to the world if an individual channels their inner desire and curiosity.

c) wonder

Cant remember what i wrote about

d) Chose text 1 and 4. I compared the unique experience of discovery based on their initial reactions and attitude towards discovery. Persona 1 - positive attitude and embraces discovery person 2- reluctant to discover

However, both texts show that all individuals are reluctant to discover due to doubts or fears but if they learn to take risks like person one they can benefit from discovery

Q2) the first image fit my story perfectly, i didnt have a real issue changing it

Q3) The essay was alright it wasnt a particularly tough question

overall- a relatively easy paper. I have a feeling it's not going to scale up much
