SEAS and Access Melbourne

Important figures:
Clearly-in for course: 88.85
Access guaranteed entry ATAR: 80
My ATAR: 75.35

I definitely qualify for two criteria under SEAS category 1, yet I still don't know exactly how SEAS works. Will SEAS potentially bump up my ATAR to meet the Access ATAR when being considered by the University of Melbourne? Or does SEAS work in some other way?

Thanks.

My understanding is that you only qualify for Access Melbourne if you qualify for certain SEAS categories. So in some respects, Access Melbourne already takes SEAS into account.

All students from my school qualify for both rural location and underrepresented schools special consideration. I'm not sure if Access Melbourne takes these particular categories into consideration but I imagine that it would. I just really want to know if my chances of getting an offer from Melbourne are slim or nigh-guaranteed, depending on how SEAS works - which I still am not sure of. I've been told by some people that it basically adds 5-10 points to your effective ATAR and by others that qualifying for SEAS merely entitles you to schemes like Access Melbourne but that you still need the base Access ATAR (80 in this case). Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Certainly no expert on this, but I'm fairly sure that's not how SEAS works. Access Melbourne is like SEAS. If you qualify in rural and/or income categories, you're guaranteed a spot with an 80+ ATAR. If you slip below, then you're not guaranteed a spot.

Not sure what course you're going for, but with an ATAR of 75, getting into Melbourne would be tricky, even with SEAS.

That's how I thought it worked, it makes a lot more sense. I was already sure that I was not going to be receiving an offer from Melbourne. I guess I'll just have to see what happens in January. Thanks.

There's no harm in keeping it up as your #1 preference, but just in case it would be a good idea to have a look at other unis too. Melbourne takes with it a lot of prestige, but remember that it's ranked #1 largely as a consequence of how well it does with research. For teaching, student satisfaction etc, pretty sure unis like Deakin tend to perform better :)

With these numbers you will not get into Melbourne.

The access Melbourne atar is like the clearly in for people who have SEAS. The idea is if you fall under a/any seas category your score will be lower than if you had no disadvantage.  so they lower the atar requirement to even out that disadvantage. If your atar is below the access Melbourne guaranteed entry (the atar requirement for disadvantaged people) then you won't get in to the uni no matter how many seas categories you have. I had like 3 seas categories and I still needed 88 for guaranteed entry to comm. I know someone who got 87.something with a lot of seas categories too and he didn't get in. If you're sure the access Melbourne atar is 80 your atar is below it then you can take Melbourne off your vtac preferences because it's wasting a spot RN

Sorry but hope everything goes well !

(Also thanks for clearly adding in the important numbers at the top, much easier than reading a wall of text.)

Thanks for the replies. I'm not broken up about Melbourne, just a little disappointed because it suited my situation best. I'll probably keep it on my preferences list because I don't need the spaces.  My second preference (Monash) is much more likely because their Guarantee ATAR is 75, and I'm quite sure I qualify for that.
