Best laptop for school use in year 12?

I'm in year 12 next year and it is compulsory to now bring my own device to school. The laptop I currently have is still pretty useful (I've had it since year 8), but it has bad battery life and is heavy to carry around. I want an efficient laptop to use for next year, with good battery (min 8 hours), is light weight and small. I still think my laptop is fine to use during home time, but I need a reasonably low price laptop (under $500 maybe) that can work well. So I was wondering if anyone has advice or has used good brands and wants to share?
Thank you (and Merry Christmas)

Hey picopoch,

If you would like a laptop under $500 then I suggest you invest in a chrome book - they are affordable (compared to other laptops) and quite efficient. I don't own a chrome book, but my friends do and they find it useful.

Although, if you are willing to spend the money for year 12 I HIGHLY SUGGEST that you go for a mac laptop. I am in year 10 (in 2017), and honestly buying the touchbar was the best thing I've done. It is the most efficient device I've had, and it has an awesome battery life.

Or you can go with the Acer aspire (don't have it but it is great). It flips and is pretty good. It's also touch screen, so if you don't want to use keyboard then you can use the HD Display.

Yeh so sorry this isn't comprehensive, don't have that much time.

Have an awesome holidays and merry Christmas !!

If you are worried about storage space then get an external hard drive, great for organisation and can  start from 1TB. If you also wanted to have all your files for VCE saved onto one hard drive then this is perfect.

Merry Xmas

Thank you for the reply!! I was looking into the Acer aspire, so I might consider something like that. As for the Mac, my brother (twin) wants to get one for himself, I'll see how he deals with it, but for me I'm kind of a Windows gal and I think getting a Mac in year 12 is going to take a bit to get use to it... Might consider for uni though.

I would check whether the BYOD policy at your school specifies specific models to choose from. Usually with programs such as this, they give you a range to choose from due to the imaging requirements. I agree with Monkeymafia regarding external hard drives - they are cost effective and you can transfer them from device to device (usually only requiring a USB port).

I would go for something like for an 'all in one' - where they can transform into either a laptop or a tablet (for convenience, obviously). Just keep in mind that usually with BYOD devices the schools install their own system image onto it - so you pretty much won't have -complete- control over it. You don't want something that is heavy, given you'll be carrying it around with you. Good luck :)

Yes thank you, I have one but haven't used it but probably will if I'm getting a student type laptop. (Btw I'm completing my SACE) thank you for the advice, I hope you had a nice Christmas!

Thank you for the reply I did receive a information sheet for byod, but it just offered suggestions. My year level was the last to not have the byod system so all the lower year levels have it, but now in year 12 it's kind of necessary. Luckily we have more 'freedom' since we can buy which ever laptop we want,  and connecting to printing and wifi is the only school thing involved. I like the idea of a 2 in 1 laptop, thanks

I don't recommend a macbook at all looking at the prices. I recommend something like a surface pro 4 or lenovo yoga. I have an xps 13 which is very good value if you want to spend a bit more.

At Baulko, there was a survey on whats the best educational laptop and they asked students questions including cost, effectiveness, features etc

ASUS Chromebook topped the survey (this is just an opinion though) so now that's what they sell at school. I personally didn't buy one, my friend bought one and she felt it wasn't really worth it though. I used to have a ASUS Zenfone and it was heaps good (lots of thoughtful features)!

Hope that helps and you find a good laptop/ device!
