Firstly, it is given that $x \geq 0$ by virtue of the square root.
$ (\sqrt{x} + \frac{1}{2})^2 + y = \frac{1}{4} $
$ (\sqrt{x} + \frac{1}{2})^2 = \frac{1}{4} - y $
$\sqrt{x} = -\frac{1}{2} \pm \sqrt{\frac{1}{4}- y} = \frac{-1 \pm \sqrt{1 - 4y}}{2} $
$ x = \frac{2 - 4y \mp 2\sqrt{1-4y}}{4} = \frac{1 - 2y\mp\sqrt{1-4y}}{2} $
