Pointless Trivia

As a deeply trivial person, I think I'm going to like this thread. ;D

- The dot on the top of a lowercase i is called a tittle
- A jiffy (as in, "back in a jiffy") is an actual measurement of time; it refers to the time it takes light to travel one centimetre
- Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street was initially orange - not green

Oxford comma, Garamond, Avett Brothers, Orla Gartland enthusiast.

Trivia is never pointless ;)

Anyways:
- The plastic bit of the shoelace is called an aglet
- The line between the numerator and denominator in a fraction is called the vinculum
- camels have 3 eyelids to protect their eyes from sand.

This icon: ~ is called a tilde.

Maybe this is common knowledge, but I stopped studying maths 4 years ago so I'm a little out of touch and I remember Mrs Harper telling me this in Year 5: the line between the numerator and the denominator is called a vinculum.

A mosquito has 47 cutting edges (their equivalent to teeth). Interesting backstory to this though: my great-grandfather served in WWII. In the very first page of his war journal is a handdrawn diagram of a mosquito, and a note listing the amount of "teeth" they have.

Below their fur, tigers also have striped skin.

It's been brought to my attention that the word in the English language with the most silent letters (4) is queue.

Most English students would know this.

The word 'oxymoron' is an oxymoron.

The Guugu Yimithirr indigenous language from a remote region of North Queensland is notable as a language that does not use egocentric coordinates, for example "three steps left; two steps backwards", instead employing cardinal directions; "move a bit to the west" to give directions. This seems unnatural to us, but is perfectly logical to speakers of Guugu Yimithirr and other languages that do this ;)
