You wont' need a word list for context; 99% of the time, you'll be writing in a much simpler manner. For text response, the 'big words' you'll be using will be very specific to your text itself and should serve some sort of purpose, other than the fact that they're simply 'big'. In that regard, which text are you doing?

What sophisticated words did you use for your texts that were specific to the text?

I think just as cleo_XO said somewhere, that sophiscated words and big words are not necessarily the same. It is certainly a good thing to be able to use sophiscated words, especially in an expository, to discriminate you from the majority mainstream, but it is probably more important to (and probably the hardest part) use them naturally.

in terms of the word banks for sophiscated words, i think ... GOOGLE :)

Not to play Devil's Advocate or anything, but I've been told Context is where you should start approaching a Lit-esque "wanky" writing style. with added emphasis on flamboyancy and such.  Of course, in doing so it should be (as Monokekie) "natural", and not simply awkward.

With that said, rather than simply using random sophisticated words here and there to sound smarter, you should be aiming to develop a sophisticated prose style in general.  Aim for fluid, expressive sentences that don't sound "robotic".  Using lots of "middle sized words" is preferable to using a few "larger" sophisticated words.

Hmmm.....I think what shinny was trying to get at was the idea that your context pieces must be appropriate to the form and audience you have chosen. So if you are writing a feature article for a magazine you will have to limit the sophistication in your writing so as to ensure that your writing remains authentic. I'm not sure what you mean by flamboyancy, but yes you can and should be creative with your writing and if possible enjoy it and be smart about it so that it seems smart, engaging and insightful at the same time.

Um, The Kite Runner for text response (so words related to betrayal, innocence, lies etc). And I guess with Context I agree with you, not that necessary to go all big worded. I think what i'm looking for in context is words related to Identity AND belonging without using those words. Haha, for text response I can just visualize people saying "have you looked in a thesaurus", but i'm not after synonyms exactly, more of just normal words which are sophisticated.
