Pre-Exam Intensive English Cram Sessions
« on: September 20, 2009, 07:25:20 pm »
Currently I'm looking for expressions of interest for what I plan to be running on several days during the next week in my term break (26th September to the 4th of October).

The sessions will be one on one as I believe this will allow me to cater the sessions more specifically to each student, since there are some minor adjustments I will need to make based on your preferences. They will run for about 3 and a half hours each, and be structured with roughly 30 minutes on general English advice and examination advice, followed by 1 hour on each of the 3 essays you'll be writing. The key elements I will be covering are structure, content and expression; three words which pretty much simplify the entire marking criteria. Given this stage of the year, my emphasis will be on structure and content.

As usual, I will be teaching my 'formulaic' style of writing which I know many prefer, especially those maths/science students like myself, as it basically simplifies and solidifies both the structure and expression elements of essay writing. While I know it's a contentious style in principle, I can assure you it does work in VCE at the least. What I'll be teaching is basically what I learnt in over a year at a tutor who charges $90 per 2 hour session each week, and has a track record of multiple 50s, with the majority of her cohort scoring over 40. My point is that basically, this style does work. With the strategies that I'll be teaching, plus a little bit of effort on your own part over the next few weeks, you'll have the tools available to be capable of scoring 40 or above.

I'll be providing a printed book of thorough notes on all of the theory I'll go through, together with examples of complete works, worksheets and articles from which you can practice, as well as examples of phrasing and general expression. Also, having focused on Hard Times and the Whose Reality context last year, extremely thorough coverage of both of these can also be included, complete with my own notes and essays regarding these topics if required. Anything regarding the other subjects which I did (Specialist Maths, Maths Methods, Chemistry, Biology and Business Management) can also be included in the sessions, possibly extending the length of the session if required.

I'll be charging $100 for the sessions, which is far less than what I normally charge for casual students, and even less than what I charge for my regular ones for the same time period. The sessions will most likely be run at the State Library, but if you live a bit further east, either Box Hill Library or my residence in Doncaster East would be more preferable as a tutoring environment. Also, to ensure that you're heading on the right track with what I've taught at the sessions, I'll also mark 2 essays of each essay type that you can just send to my e-mail, which I can then mark digitally with my graphics tablet and send back. So basically, send in your expressions of interest or any enquiries or questions either in this thread, to my email ([email protected]) or give me a ring on 0433 599 303 to secure your spots early as I won't have that many sessions available. As I said before, these sessions are designed to be moulded around a bit to suit your needs so there's plenty of room for negotiation, so yeh, just get in contact with me and I'll see what we can work out. Lastly, just as a guarantee since I know that many students are rightfully skeptical of student tutors, I'll offer a 1 hour 'grace' period where if you're not satisfied with what you're receiving within the first hour, you can just walk out and not pay a cent. However, judging from my VCE experience, I can assure you you'll probably learn more about how to actually ace the English exam in this single session than you have probably within an entire year of English classes at school.

Get in quick if you're still interested! While I did say they were just expressions of interests last night, it's definitely going to occur now with half the available time slots I'm willing to run already filled! In terms of times, what will happen is there will be two sessions a day, a morning and afternoon one. The morning session runs 10:00AM-12:00PM, followed by a 12:00-12:40PM lunch break, then 12:40-2:10PM. The afternoon session runs 2:30-6:00PM. The available timeslots as of the edit time of this post are as follows (AM=morning session, PM=afternoon session);
26/09 PM
28/09 AM
30/09 AM and PM
1/10 PM
3/10 AM and PM

If you're not available any of these days, contact me and I might open up another day.

OK it seems I've only got one session left now on Saturday the 3rd of October from 2:30 to 6. With some great positive feedback coming out from these sessions and no one having used the 'grace period' yet, it seems others are definitely finding these sessions beneficial. So if you don't want to miss out, get in quick to secure yourself this last session!

Due to some recent interest regarding these cram sessions, I'm opening up one spot this coming Thursday the 28th at night at either my residence in Doncaster East, or your's. I'll only be driving to places in the Eastern suburbs however. First in, first serve and same details as above; $100 for 3 and a half hours, grace period still applies. More endorsements and such can be found over here.
