Hi,

I really want to try out for JMSS next year. Has anyone gotten in without tuition?

Thanks! :D

Anyone could get in JMSS without tuition, just put in the effort.

What do you need to do to prepare for the exam? I'm honestly really nervous.

Hwahaha! I finally have experience with the JMSS entry exam and I can now bestow upon you this wisdom.
I honestly expected the test to be super difficult, but it's actually pretty easy (imo).

Here are some tips to help you prepare:
• Practice answering with practice tests under timed conditions (science reasoning, numerical reasoning, mathematics)
• Practice writing pracs and scientific essays under timed conditions (give yourself 5 minutes for planning and 25 minuts for writing
• Study year 9 math concepts and know them well because you need to complete the questions quickly (quadratics, trig, indices, algebra)
• Study year 9 and 8 science concepts (the test isn't that heavy with scientific content, if that makes sense)

I personally didn't go to JAC, Henderson or Edu-Kingdom for their JMSS preparation classes. So you don't HAVE to go tutoring for this test, but I guess it helps with working under timed conditions. Apparently they make the tests way harder than they actually are, so I don't think it's worth going (up to you though). I didn't buy any of the practice tests either. Just practice working on answering the questions accurately and quickly.

Good luck! :DD
If you have any more questions, you can ask me or anyone else on this thread!

hi! In my opinion, you can definitely get in without tuition, if you put in the effort. I did go to tutoring, but I found that it didn't really help much at all. I only went for two terms though. In the end, I found that all the questions in the tests didn't really have anything we covered in tutoring, but the stuff I covered on my own. good luck !! :)

Hello everyone,
I have been reading this since it started but I decided to make an account as I had a question  ;D
I got an offer at jmss but I havent accepted it because I was wondering how our subjects/electives would work. I have read the 2018 prospectus online but it wasn't too helpful.
So, does anyone know how many electives we can choose and the elective options (excluding science electives)?

All the electives are science electives. In year 10, you do maths (or methods), English, science, Health/PE, sports, emerging technologies (or french/jap) and 2 science electives.

yeah same, I was wondering how many electives we get to choose? and when is the methods test? Currently at my school I'm talking extrension maths as an elective, but I'm still not sure if I should do it or not. thanks :))

EDIT: also, what 1/2 are you allowed to do in year 10 at jmss? I was originally going to do bio next year but I'm not sure now haha

You pick 2 electives (one elective per semester). I'm pretty sure you'll get more info about methods test on info night so I'm not sure. Its totally up to you, but I think you should only do methods if you've currently doing year 10 maths. (just as a foundation since you don't do year 10 maths if you're doing methods)

EDIT: You can only do unit 2 physics and methods in yr 10. Nothing else.. They let you advance (skip 1/2) one or two subjects in year 11 though. (depending on your average)

Do you know what time the school actually closes? I'm scared that I will somehow stuff up handing them the enrollment documents (literally the easiest part of the whole process).

My school finishes around the same time as JMSS and it takes a while to drive there.

Wait, so you can't do Bio 1/2 in Year 10? D:

I think the office is open until 5:00 (someone correct me) I know it's still open until 4:30 though.

What's the reason behind only physics and methods in Year 10? I thought most students would want to do bio, and thus there would be classes for it.

Hold up, there's some misconceptions here, Bio 1/2 is taught in Year 10 but is not accredited as a VCE subject (they're named other subjects). Lot's of the bio elective sciences are the same as VCE biology. The cells to systems kids did the Biology Unit 1 exam in semester 1.

Oh what, that's so sad D:
I planned to start 2 VCE (or at least 1) subjects in Year 10. Why isn't it being accredited?
