I bet that subject line has never been used before haha. ;D

We had some interesting discussion on the English Language board recently regarding the distinction between "potato cake" and "potato scallop" (see here for more). It stemmed from this study (and related studies), which maps geographical lexical variation across Australia.

So I thought we could discuss the terms ourselves! Answer the questions below using the following template:

Code: [Select]
What do you call a battered, deep-fried potato snack?
What general term do you use to refer to swimwear?
What do you call the object that you might drink water from in a park or school?
What do you call a barbecued sausage, served in a single slice of bread?
Which term do you use when someone’s nose is bleeding?
What do you call the place where you might buy lunch at school?
Does the word ‘dance’ rhyme with ‘pants’, or ‘aunts’?
What do you call the small local shop that sells newspapers, lollies, drinks and basic groceries?
What do you call a frozen, water-based sweet treat?
Which of these would you use to describe kissing someone?
- Get with?
- Hook up?
- Kiss?
- Kissing?
- Mac on/mack on?
- Make out?
- Pash?
- Snog?
- Other?
What is your most common way of expressing laughter when chatting online, or in texts?
What is your preferred way of describing a thing or situation that is pretty good?

Have at it! ;D I'll be posting the results of the initial survey (which has 20,000 responses!) incrementally throughout the thread. :)

I still call them Milk Bars - although the very american convenience store definition is starting to gain some sort of momentum i think. They aren't as popular as they used to be, that's for sure. I genuinely thought you just found this question funny hahaha.

I found this whole thread funny to be honest ;) Although i'm genuinely interested as to how many people say 'bubbler' for the water drinking object. I think this is a common term used in QLD & NSW? I remember when I was in Year 10 we had a teacher move from QLD and when she first referred to 'bubbler' everyone started pissing themselves laughing. I think it's a good idea to see our different interpretations of things, though  ::)
