Hi, I am studying W.H Auden for representing people and politics, wondering if there are any suggestions for related material that will work well that isn't poetic!!??

Perhaps Margaret Atwood's novel The Handmaid's Tale interests you? It's a novel so it's not short to analyse. Otherwise I'll suggest an article like this one from the New York Times that specifically addresses politics :)

hi :)
I'm also doing WWWT for Mod C and I just recently did my assessment last term and you'll be happy to hear that your related text does not in any way have to have anything to do with Aboriginal rights and justice at all :) this module, I think, is much more concerned with the representation and the way composers present their ideas through use of rhetoric devices to manipulate/convince their audience to align with their own political views and perceptions, rather than the content based stuff such as equality/ promotion of rights for minority groups, although certainly, it wouldn't be a bad idea to use a related text that does talk about stuff like that
For my related, I did a documentary about climate change and scored within the A range..
the points to my essay were that: composers challenge the moral integrity of their audience through their representations to confront them with unconsidered truths, leading to a realignment of their political views, and: through the portrayal of the personal shift in moral and political values, composers posit the capacity for change

Here's a website my teacher provided us with for potential related texts if in any case you need any:
http://www.filmsforaction.org/walloffilms/
:)

thanks so much!!! i appreciate the help -- you've answered all my questions. I'll have a look at that website now. good luck with trials

You could look at some of George Orwell's other works if you wanted something similarly political without picking a text that many people choose?
e.g. Homage to Catalonia, Burmese days, etc...

You could also look at Shooting An Elephant if you've got your heart set on Orwell.

I'd say this is highly unlikely to happen - What I'd plan to do is use my Discovery ORT for Module C, if it absolutely comes down to that. Just have a think about how you'd tie it in off the tiny chance they actually request two related texts. That's what I'd do at least :)

Hello!

I'm in desperate need of a related text for Wag the Dog. I dont want a movie or a book. A short story, novella, news article etc would be awesome please!
I have heard about Candide but that seems compicated.

Thank you in advance

I decided to go with House of Cards. Themes it shares with The Crucible include deception, self-interest, corruption of innocence, power and reputation. Plus it's full of film techniques.

Hi, im currently starting Mod C and I was wondering if you could let me know what episode you used or any other good episodes? Any help would be much appreciated :)

Hi :) I am currently studying the crucible for module C and happened to stumble along this forum. I'm trying to find a related text based on the representation of people and politics. House of cards was recommended to me, hence why I'm curious as to what episode the previous commenter used for their essay and/or any other relevant episodes. Thank you :D

Hi there! For MOD C, my related texts were Eugene Delacroix's painting "Liberty Leading the People" and Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" as a back-up.
In my opinion, a painting was definitely easy to use as I didn't really have to memorise any quotes, but I believe it's good to have a background or at least some knowledge in art analysis if you were to analyse a painting. I had done Art as a major in junior years + my teacher helped analyse. Despite this, there are LOADS of sites online dedicated to analysing Delacroix's painting since it's practically iconic.
I originally was going to refer to the book for The Handmaid's Tale but I last minute switched to any one of the episodes from the TV show instead. I work well with visual stuff, so using a TV show would've been easy for me to remember.
I recommend choosing texts you genuinely enjoy or like, because you'll be more inclined to study, read/watch and analyse them!

I don't know which episodes were studied unfortunately, hopefully someone else can pipe in! But depending on what you like, there's a bunch of different ORTs I'd happily recommend for this module. If you don't mind novels, then Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale is good. Our modern lecturer Susie also recommends Candide by Voltaire. It's philosophical, and very sophisticated ;) Political speeches work really well for this module too!

Wow! Is there a copy of your essay uploaded to the notes section? I'd love to see how you incorporated this into your essay.

Hey, there! I am studying 'The Crucible' for my Module C and I have two related texts in mind for it. The first is Orwell's essay "Why I Write" and the other is Yue Minjun's painting "Execution" but I'm not sure which one I would like to settle on. I would like any thoughts on which text would be more appropriate in relation to my prescribed text.

Remember that it doesn't always have to relate, it can go in a different direction, opening up new ideas to argue.
I can't say which text i'd prefer, as I've never looked at either of them. But my advice would just be to pick whichever one speaks to you more, appeals to you more. That is the one you will enjoy doing the most!
"Live life like a pineapple. Stand tall, wear a crown and be sweet on the inside"

"May you grow up to be righteous; may you grow up to be true. May you always know the truth and see the lights surrounding you. May you always be courageous, stand upright and be strong"

"Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire"
