SCHS Written Application
« on: June 16, 2017, 04:25:35 pm »

Hey everyone!
So I recently received an email from Suzanne Cory High School informing me that I needed to send them a written application. The first question that they ask is "Outline the reasons why you want to be a student of Suzanne Cory High School". I pretty much know why I want to go (facilities, sporting opportunities, motivation from other students and what not) but how can I expand on these things to write a lengthy paragraph?

Also, seeing as the majority of people would sorta have the same reasons as to why they want to go to a selective school, what other reasons can I outline?

Thanks!

Hey guys!
So, for the written application I have answered the first question (Outlining reasons for why I want to attend SCHS). If you could read over this and try to be as critical as possible, it would be great. Thanks!

Also, how would I start the second question (Outline achievements)? I don't want to sound like I'm just talking myself up... Thanks a lot!!!

Firstly, becoming a student at Suzanne Cory High School will allow me to take full advantage of the innovative structures and facilities. The state of the art facilities will help me to succeed at the best of my ability. The resources provided at the school will assist me in further developing my level of education and enhance my learning experience. As well as in academia, the facilities provided at the school will also aid in my sporting progression. The variety of sporting grounds and co-curricular opportunities available at the school will help me improve my skills in various sports and develop the ability to work with others. The co-curricular activities will teach me various other skills that will be not only be used in aspects of school life but also in the wider community. Furthermore, attending school with other motivated students who are eager to succeed will push me to reach my full potential and will drive me to work harder. This will in turn allow me to achieve higher goals and make the most of the Suzanne Cory High School environment.

Talk about how the school can provide you with a holistic educational experience (i.e co-curricular and academia). Just don't say that you love everything and the school can help provide them for you though, they'll know you're bullshitting.

Firstly, becoming a student at Suzanne Cory High School will allow me to take full advantage of the innovative structures and facilities. The state of the art facilities will help me to succeed at the best of my ability. The resources provided at the school will assist me in further developing my level of education and enhance my learning experience. Thus far, it just seems like generic praise of "this is a good school with good facilities". Try and elaborate more about specific stuff you know about the school (i.e what makes the facilities "state of the art" and "innovative") - it makes you look eager which can only go well for you. As well as in academia, the facilities provided at the school will also aid in my sporting progression. The variety of sporting grounds and co-curricular opportunities available at the school will help me improve my skills in various sports and develop the ability to work with others. You've said "sport" here, but you haven't said what sport you do. The co-curricular activities will teach me various other skills that will be not only be used in aspects of school life but also in the wider community. Again, this is general. Elaborate. Furthermore, attending school with other motivated students who are eager to succeed will push me to reach my full potential and will drive me to work harder. This will in turn allow me to achieve higher goals and make the most of the Suzanne Cory High School environment. Your last point should stand out more because it's essentially why there are selective schools in the first place: to create an environment for high-achieving students.

Hope that helps, good luck.

Thanks for the reply. Wanted to ask, what did you mean by 'holistic educational experience'? Thanks!

So one that just doesn't just focus on academics, but also co-curricular activities.

Ok thanks.
So from what I have written, does that sorta talk about co-curricular activities or do I still need to elaborate on it? What co-curricular stuff could I possibly talk about?
Btw, would you by any chance be able to tell me more stuff I could write for why someone would wanna join? Like everyone pretty much has the same reasons sooo... I've so far included how the school is located in close proximity of Victoria University so what would allow students to access their facilities and programs. I have also talked about the athletics track adjacent to the school. I play cricket if that helps. So if you could add some more I guess facilities and stuff I could talk about that would be great.

Thanks a lot!

Not sure if this will be relevant because I'm in Sydney and have no knowledge about this school, but co-curricular could include stuff like leadership, sport, volunteering/community service, music, debating, speech, and academic competitions that the school could give you the opportunity to enter! :)
HSC 2017: Chemistry / English Advanced / English Extension 1 / Legal Studies (5th in NSW) / Math Extension 1 / Math Extension 2

Hey guys!
I have modified the answer from before and this is what it looks life now. I just wanted to ask hahahaha, I can't really think of a way to elaborate on how the co-curricular activities will give me skills that will be used in the community as well as the school. Could you please help out on that? Thanks a lot!  ;D

Also, I can I further explain the ending bit (motivation from other students)? You mentioned that it needed to stand out more so can you please explain that? Thanks.  :)

Firstly, becoming a student at Suzanne Cory High School will allow me to take full advantage of the innovative structures and facilities and will help me to succeed at the best of my ability. The learning areas, such as the Agora space, provide a unique method of learning and interaction with other students. The close proximity to Victoria University also provides the opportunity to access university facilities and programs. As well as in academia, the facilities provided at the school will also aid in my sporting progression. The wide range of sporting and co-curricular opportunities available at the school will allow me to involve myself in various groups and teams and develop the ability to work with others. The athletics track adjacent to the school is also a great facility that can be accessed by students and will ultimately be beneficial to my sports involvement. The co-curricular activities will provide me with various other skills that will be not only be used in aspects of school life but also in the wider community. Furthermore, attending school with other motivated students who are eager to succeed will push me to reach my full potential and will drive me to work harder. This will in turn allow me to achieve higher goals and make the most of the Suzanne Cory High School environment.

Your writing is good. However, it seems all your writing is what school can offer you. More importantly I think you need to address what you can offer to the school.

I agree but I feel like the question was specifically asking why I wanted to join the school. I think that's why I wrote what I did. There is another question where I need to outline achievements and all that so I think that's where I will mention what I can offer the school. If you disagree with what I said or I have misinterpreted what you said, please clarify.  :)

Thanks!
