Intro Micro is out, grades are leaving me so disappointed :(
Do grades tend to be higher or lower in your first sem?

Can't speak from experience being a first year Commerce student as well, but I've heard from a number of past students that their first semesters were their worst.

No, not at all. 75 is an awesome WAM, don't get discouraged by results other people post in these threads. If anything, it puts you in a great position because you can get into tons of graduate courses with scores like that, and if you can't, it won't require too much extra work to boost it up even higher.

when the actual result is present (not just the WAM change) is it likely to change?
So if they make a mistake with your score it will change. But that barely happens. After four semesters of uni it has never happened to me.

It happened to a friend of mine last year though. He did immunology or something and they messed the cohorts MCQ part of the test. Scores went up though so nobody complained aha.

Basic Ecom was updated in the WAM this afternoon at some time. For first years, I wouldn't put too much pressure on yourselves in your first semester. It takes a while sometimes to adjust to university and good study habits is part of that. For what it's worth my first semester was by far my worst and every semester has been a better than the previous one. Good luck finding out what works you and stick with it!

very comforting to hear that as my WAM this first semester has been so bad and i am so frustrated with myself. but at the same time this is going to definitely make me be determined to achieve a LOT better.

I honestly wouldn't stress too much, in a UoM 3-year degree you're only 1/6th of the way there. It's good that you're frustrated because it shows you care :)

If you're doing BComm there are plenty of people with <70 wams with internships/grad offers and just as many with 85+ who don't have one, there's a lot more of a holistic view.

Just to all the JAFFYs disappointed with their first semester:

For me I approached that semester as an experiment kinda thing. I really didn't care what marks I was going to get. I just wanted to see what worked well and what didn't - and figure out what I needed to do in order to do well for the rest of my degree. Bc uni and school are both different, you gotta study much differently - especially time wise. So don't focus too much on your results, just see what you did right and what you did wrong.

And for motivational purposes - I have a friend who did poorly in both semesters of first year. He then geared it up and got DEANS award in second year. He just told me his results for first sem of third year and he destroyed it! So don't define yourself based on this semester only. Still got a long way to go. If you are going to apply for med, dent etc then first semester of first year is barely worth anything lol.

All the best guys!
