Quote from: The Age
VCE students will no longer receive their final score over SMS after a damning report found VCE authorities failed to perform basic risk assessments when they handed confidential student data to a digital marketing company.

...

The redacted report, marked "Private and Confidential", found that an outsourced programmer working in Sri Lanka for marketing company Salmat Digital was responsible for the bungle.

The programmer meant to send out an SMS confirming the students' registration, but instead sent out their results.

What are your thoughts on this?

Current VCEers: are you annoyed? Would have you preferred to receive your results via text?
Class of 2016: were you affected by this?

Pretty hectic.

Can certainly see why they've done it, it was a bit of a farce.
When I saw the thing unfolding on Facebook last year, I sat there with my phone in my hands, numbers typed in, ready to send the text. I sat there for at least 5-10 minutes, staring at my phone. But I chickened out - what if it wasn't the actual result? What if I saw a score I didn't want to see? Plus, I wanted to see my results on my laptop - it was how I had planned to receive my results all year.

In hindsight, very glad I didn't send that text. The only benefit would have been saving me from a restless night the night before ATARs were released (I had been super chill about results the whole year, then as soon as it got to the night before, I started doubting myself and managed to convince myself I wouldn't even crack into the 80s). But, I seriously needed to see my ATAR on the official website to believe it. I logged out and back in about 5 times and cried a bit before I seriously believed it, so if I had have sent that text, I'd have been worrying myself sick for 5 days.

I think, if something similar happened in uni - no-one would really care (I actually signed up for SMS results for the first time ever to get this semester's results). But year 12 results? Although they shouldn't have as much weight put on them as we currently do, the reality is that it's a big deal for a majority of people. And if nothing else, they're very symbolic - you've finished high school, and if you go onto further education, it's going to be quite different to what you've been used to for the past 13 years.

I think the SMS result system, if done correctly, can be awesome. But, the key is that it wasn't, and what happened last year caused a fair bit of anxiety and stress for a lot of students.

The new app being mentioned in that article should've been the default norm from the beginning. Literally every smartphone has push notifications in one form or another and it would not be difficult at all to send out a push notification at 7am on results day saying something like 'Results now available, log in to the app'.

I just lol'd at the 'outsourced programmer'. That is the reality these days.

I don't have any problem with this. Last year I saw the incident unfold in Facebook and I thought it was a joke. By the time I realised it was real, it was too late and I was annoyed I missed out. In hindsight it didn't really matter but it would have saved me several nerve-wracking days of waiting. In the end, the text didn't even come at 7am and I just logged on at the website to check, so SMS system is superfluous.

I was just thinking about this so apologies.. it's sort of off-topic but relevant to the whole debarcle.

How many people actually still use SMS? I would have thought online-based IM such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp etc. is now the dominant form of communication via a device.

I know I barely SMS anyone anymore. Some food for thought.

A message on Facebook is literally the equivalent of an SMS now - you get instantly notified (provided you have an active internet/data connection) etc etc etc.

It really highlights whether VCAA/VTAC have missed an opportunity in the past couple of years.

An interesting thought...
While it is true that less people use SMS, if it was another platform would VCAA/VTAC make us write our username on our student information form? Or would we create a separate account for it?

I assume it would be an app that directly links to the resultsandatar service? So in theory you would not be able to login to the app until the release date/time + no actual registration would be needed?

I reckon you're onto a winner with the app idea. Makes a lot of sense in my mind.

It's funny that you guys mention this because this is exactly what VTAC is planning on doing - creating an in-house app. If anyone asked, the idea was first heard here :D

Yeah? Is that a well-known thing? Am I just late on the news? Haha. 😂

Seriously, though - that makes heaps of sense.

... on the assumption the app doesn't crash somehow, or send push notifications with ATARs like five days prior to intended release. :P

I believed it did make the news not too long before this thread was created.
That's true, hopefully it doesn't :)
