Screen adaptions of books

Do you mind if screen adaptions divert from the book storyline? Do you think they should remain faithful? What are the best adaptions, and what are the worst adaptions?

So glad I only first read the ASOIAF books in 2014. Massive props to anyone still waiting from '96
