my mum says melbourne high is bad because there is too much pressure. she keeps trying to persuade me by saying things like "mhs had a lot of negative points"and "If your in an accelerated learning class at a good public school already whats the point of going?" ( im at mckinnon btw)

I'll just outline what I view the positives and negatives are of Melbourne High School
Positives
-You are in a competitive environment which could motivate you to do better
-You may have slightly better resources than your previous school
-You'll meet lots of great new people
-There are heaps of extracurricular activities in Melbourne High School

Negatives
-Public transport really eats up at our time
-The teaching quality in Melbourne High School in my opinion is not better than a good public school. There are heaps of great teachers but there are a fair share of not so good teachers. But the not so good teachers are a minority and not that many people get them in VCE, unless you're unlucky like me.
-Competitive environment might actually be suffocating to some people
-No accelerated maths course
-You no longer get to see your current friends on a regular basis

Anyway it's up to you. You should just do what you feel would be best.

Melbourne High don't really offer accelerated courses or much freedom in accelerating VCE studies but rather are more focused on extracurricular activities and wellbeing. However, you do get the study in a competitive environment which is up to you whether you like or not.

I would go if I were you, this is an opportunity that is worth taking, and if you don't take it later on in life you will be kicking yourself for not going. You've worked so hard for this opportunity. Zhen is right you will lose your old friends, but you will make new ones... Everybody going to Melbourne High is new, so they are going through the same thing as you. The real question is whether you want to be an average student at MHS or a high achieving student at McKinnon? Take the opportunity, plus I wanna see you in year 10 (if I get in🤞)!! Starting the grind again

This is kind of an unpopular opinion but whatever. As a current MHS student, MHS is definitely a good school but it's overrated AS HELL.

The reason it's so good sn't because of the facilities or the teachers or w/e bullshit the staff will tell you, it's because it leaches the smart students from every school. So if you think MHS is a perfect school where everyone is happy and the teachers are the best in the state and the teaching system is second to none and if you think you will get a better education by going to MHS then prepare to be disappointed. Contrary to popular belief, there are A LOT of people in MHS who don't like it. Just look at the year 12 speech drama last year http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/melbourne-high-student-sparks-outcry-by-saying-he-no-longer-believes-in-school-masters/news-story/a3809fae565205e96418b66297fd3153 Even in macrob it's the same if not worse  http://www.news.com.au/national/victoria/news/students-at-prestigious-melbourne-school-posts-note-explaining-why-she-defecated-on-bathroom-floor/news-story/80f5ed140d105d685e1f167a494af6ae

However if you're a competitive person who wants to be the best student in every class then going to MHS is a pretty good idea since there will probably be a lot of people who are smarter/more hardworking than you which will cause you to try harder and develop good study habits.

I think you should take the test either way just for experience.

You've been working so hard for an entry to a selective school, why would you drop off now? You even made a thread preparing for NEXT YEAR incase you didn't get in? I have no idea why your actually debating this offer, especially when before you cared so much on getting in. You did put MHS as first preference, right?

That was my opinion, but in the end it is all up to you. You do whatever you want to do. Whatever decision you make will be a good one.

It mostly up to you. "Even though the teachers are bad in the end it you still depend on yourself"( lol my mum always says this ... Asian parents... )mhs is competitive, I guess it can push you more to strive for better results. A lot of people want to go to mhs, and this is a chance for you, you deserve to go. Anyways still up to you. I currently go to a private school and making the choice to go to MR was hard. Before doing the exam i knew that there would've being a lot of challenges for me to chose if I was gonna go (if I got in) . Even now I have a lot of doubts.

Mainly some of the teachers (imagine getting a teacher who literally doesn't teach you anything, just tells you to do work from the text book in vce in a SELECT ENTRY SCHOOL) and the staff who are pretty delusional and disconnected from reality.

wow, that is indeed bad. I would have thought that the teaching in a selective entry school would be better, but from what I have read, the teaching at MHS is quite bad. So am I right that the academic achievements of MHS are due to the students entirely, who help and encourage each other because the teachers are hopeless?

The thing about selective schools like Melbourne and macrob is that they collect all the really high-achieving students from around the state and put them in one school. The school gets amazing results because the kids themselves are good, not because of the school. People see the results and think that the school is good, that the teachers are good, but it's really just the students who bring the results. I've heard from a lot of people who go to melbourne or macrob that the teachers are bad and that the schools are overhyped.

From what I've heard from friends; MHS is only pretty good because of the overachieving students who usually have tuition outside of school.

However as hellosir said; you even made a new topic for in case you DIDN'T get into mhs, why back out now?
But in the end, you have to decide what's best and what you want, not your mother.

Edit: Quinn just completely ninja'ed me and posted basically what I was gonna say  :P
