4 subjects in year 12

Hi all, I am currently in Year 9 and I am studying two units 1/2 subjects this year: Methods and Bio. My plan for the next 3 years looks a lil something like this:

Year 10:
Psych 1/2
VET Lab Skills 1/2

Year 11:
Methods 3/4
Bio 3/4
VET Lab Skills 3/4
English 1/2
Chemistry 1/2
Accounting /2

Year 12:
Psych 3/4
English 3/4
Chemistry 3/4
Accounting 3/4

Now, my question is: do I have to do 5 subjects in Year 12? Or can I just do 4?

I was thinking that if I only did 4, I would have more time to focus on them and do my best. However, I don't know if this is allowed. If it isn't, what's a good unit 3/4 subject to pick up without a 1/2?

yes you can definitely do 4 3/4's in year 12 and nice to see you completing other ones before year 12. I know someone who only did 3 3/4's + UMEP so it doesn't really matter (did 3 3/4's before year 12).

Hey Highway_end,

Welcome to ATAR Notes! :D

You should be able to do four in Year 12. I know that some schools are a little hesitant, though. My only thought here is the lack of continuity with your subjects (like, the year between Bio 1/2 and Bio 3/4, Methods 1/2 and Methods 3/4 etc.). I'm honestly not sure if that would be an issue or not, though. :)

I'd almost be inclined to do Bio 3/4 next year, but that probably depends on a lot of factors.

What are you hoping to do after Year 12 at the moment?

Hi, thank you for the reply!

After Year 12 I plan on doing Medicine in uni, keeping in mind the difficulty and high ATAR required :(

My school doesn't allow us to do Bio 3/4 or Methods 3/4 in year 10.

Instead, we have to do Spesh 1/2 in year 10 to fill the gap, but can choose to drop it later on (ie. not do Spesh 3/4 in year 12) which is what I'm doing because maths isn't my strength and I don't enjoy doing it lol

I have found out at school today that we MUST do 5 subjects in year 12 even if that means taking a 3/4 without a 1/2. Something about the curriculum being designed like that and how if we have too many free periods, students tend to slack off and get lazy (kinda stupid imo)

Any advice on which 3/4 subject I should do without a corresponding 1/2??

Hey, no worries at all! :)

Med - nice!

Sucks about the no four subjects in Year 12 thing, but not the end of the world. I can see why your school would have that policy - I'm pretty sure mine had the same.

With that in mind, are you looking to pick up an eighth 3/4, or move around your subjects so that you stay with the seven?

I was thinking of picking up an 8th 3/4

I think doing 8 3/4's might be a bit much, perhaps shift one of your year 11 3/4s to year 12 (maybe methods) or talk to your school further. A lot of schools are okay with just doing four 3/4s in year 12 (a lot have issues with doing more than 1 in year 11 though), and if you're doing so many in year 11 there isn't a real need to do 5, especially if you do well in them.

Pushing Methods back would see a pretty big gap between Methods 1/2 in Year 9 and Methods 3/4 in Year 12, though.

As above, I'd probably speak with your school further. But from personal experience, HHD is pretty good to pick up without the 1/2. :)

I reckon you might be able to persuade the school to let you do 3/4 bio in year 10. Really fking stupid if they don't otherwise they should discontinue year 9 classes altogether since they killed the reason why they had it in the first place.

About 4 vce subjects, they would be pretty firm on their stance so consider doing a uni extension subject :)

Any reason why you want to pursue Accounting ?

This guy's school I'm pretty sure doesn't allow 4 subjects in year 12. Most schools are quite strict with VCE subjects so just because one school allows someone to do something, doesn't mean the same with apply elsewhere.

Yes, apparently my year level is gonna be the last one to have the chance to do bio 1/2 in year 9. In previous years, they would let about 20 or so students continue to do bio 3/4 in year 10. This year, only 2 students have been allowed to do so (not me) because the school has found that the ones who did it in yr 10 weren't performing as well as they were hoping.

I did consider doing a uni ext subject but I feel like the times and location might be too inconvenient, will definitely try to find out more though.

I'm quite interested in accounting and I just wanna learn more about it :)

Just reconsider doing Spesh in year 12.   Doing Methods in year 11 and not following up with Spesh in year 12 would honestly be a waste considering you're capable enough for them to let you do 1/2 in year 9. Even if you do close the the bare minimum, the scaling will MORE than make up for it.

For Bio, see if this year's year 10 class performs well. If they do, then they might allow you to continue with bio 3/4 in year 10. I don't know why one year level performing particularly bad is reflective of how most year levels will perform. Seems like they're grasping on straws.

For uni extension, classes run in many different schools, not just Uni so you might be able to find a place that is appropriate.

Thanks for the advice regarding Spesh and Uni Extension! :)
Unfortunately, it looks like there isn't anything I can do about Bio because we have already completed our subject selections a few weeks ago. My school (Box Hill High Schl) is very adamant on shutting down the Year 9 Bio 1/2 classes after this year and on restricting the number of students for next year's final Year 10 Bio 3/4 class.

Is there any reason why they allow certain people to be able to do it in year 10? If it's based on marks I can understand why.

Your subject selections don't mean anything. You can still change your subjects.

It was based on a chemistry and physics test we did earlier this year (covered the Year 10 curriculum), and how well the teacher thinks we can learn/absorb new material to do a fast-tracked 3/4 subject in Year 10. He also mentioned something about the student's maturity levels :-\ Looking back, the reasons are very subjective and based entirely on the teacher's perspective of the student so it is probably biased as well. He didn't take into account the one bio test we did which was after he made his decision. 6 of the students in my class got the OK to do Bio 3/4 next year but only 2 chose to do it.

Unfortunately very common for schools to be a bit incompetent and play around people's VCE like that. Really disagree with how disjointed the VCE timeline would look like for some students in your school. Nevertheless, best of luck for the rest of your VCE! See how you find Spesh 1/2. If its hard you don't have to do 3/4.
