Prelim --> HSC

Hi guys, I just got my prelims back for both physics, chemistry, in subjects I was by far, first in all year. But now, in my prelims, I have received a mark below average of the cohort, both my teachers were shocked because I generally do well andhad studied for prelims quite a bit. I was wondering whether these marks reflect my success in year 12, or if I work extra extra hard, I could go back to my previous success. Please help, I am a buuit confused and upset as my prelims have made all my hard work throughout the year go down the drain. Thanks.

Sorry to hear that :(
Your prelims really don’t reflect how you will go in Year 12. By the looks of it, you mastered the whole of the course, which is good because Year 12 Chemistry has very different content to what you do in Prelims (much more fun) and Prelims becomes assumed knowledge. Now there is only forward, identify what you did wrong in the last exam so that you can prevent a repeat in the HSC course. :D

Dont worry, things can only get better from now on. There is MUCH more resources on the HSC course, just look at all the threads and revision videos the atarnotes guys have made for you!!
For specific, in the sciences I would urge to you to make a routine and stick to it!!!
You need to be on top of your work in Year 12 if you want good marks. My opinion would be to make summary notes at the end of every week on the stuff you have learnt at school, this means notes dont need to be crammed and made during half yearlies and trials, thats when you should be doing past papers. Furthermore, on a daily basis, maybe you can set aside 10 or 15 minutes a day just to quickly skim over your school work and maybe try summarise them super concisely, it will help when making summary notes.
Dont worry to much about your prelim results now, its past, nothing can be changed.
As I said, its all up from now. We are all here to help you. :)

Hey man,

That truly sucks. I hate it when that happened to me.

Anyways, this definitely DOES NOT REFLECT ANYTHING! Firstly, the Preliminary course and the HSC course for Chemistry is WAY different (idk about Phys, I dropped it :) ).

The HSC course for Chem, however just uses basic concepts and calculations from the prelim to save time in the HSC and so that they can ask harder questions.

So overall, you should be fine, just read the textbook (would recommend Jacarada) and learn the concepts and you will be great!

Hope it helped! :)

I know it’s tough, but don’t be down on yourself too much! I was like you in year 11 chem, I only got 66 for my final exam and honestly I cried after getting that back because I wasn’t expecting it after all the work I put in! The year 12 chem syllabus though is so much more interesting, and prelims aren’t an indicator or how you will do. I went from below average in my class in year 11 to ranked second in chem by the end of year 12 and getting a band 6 in it. So anything is possible don’t worry too much :) Good luck for this year :)

Hey man, how have your marks for year 12 turned out so far? I experienced somewhat the same thing, it can probably be explained by the fact that this is your first lot of exams where you're assessed on everything you've learnt over the entire year. Where I go to school leading up to year 10 our exams where broken into half yearly (Term 1 and 2 content) and end of yearly (Term 3 and 4 content). The pressure to learn content that spans over the whole year can be quite hefty but I would never assume someones year 12 performance on their year 11 prelim exams. Good luck in your HSC this year!
