Should I drop to Standard?

We got back our prelim marks and rankings and right now I'm rank 56/109. My mark for the prelim test was 56% while my overall mark for the year was 61%. The teachers said that I should drop to standard but I'm not sure what to do. I didn't study anything at all for the yearlies and I know that I can do better. Apparently only a small amount of people get band 6 in standard while many get more in Advanced which can help my atar.

Welcome to the forums!! ;D

If you can do better, I think you should ask for an opportunity to prove that. Ask to stay for at least one assessment and use it as an opportunity to show them (and yourself) you can do better! You should absolutely drop if you think it will improve your mark, but if you think you can improve your scores in Advanced, then I'd say go for it ;D

Just adding on to what Jamon said above, but yes you should definitely stay in Advanced for at least a term and see how you go. There are a lot more resources in Year 12 advanced than standard, which can definitely make english a lot more easier to understand. Adding more effort and dedication in advanced will definitely motivate you to do a better job. Moving down to standard doesn't necessarily mean that you will top the class. For example, at least 10 girls dropped to standard last year. You would kind of expect them to top the class, but its surprising how the ones who've been in standard since prelim have beaten the former advanced students in most assessment tasks. It's because the former adv. students don't really put in effort into the subject.

Try and add more effort in adv. english and see how you perform this term :)

Which will hold greater rule over you? Your fear or your curiosity?

I don’t think it’s neccessarily a lot harder but there is more expected of you in advanced than standard

Think about it this way - everyone does paper 1. Being an advanced student will put you at a much greater advantage for this

Hi there!

Dropping down to standard may not necesarily increase your marks (and you will be more disadvantaged due to worse scaling).

Only the texts are different... if the bad area for you is writing, changing to std eng will not improve it.

Try to identify where you are losing marks (and why)... but do not drop down to std english (If you really don't have to).

Definitely stay in Advanced. I was literally just like you after the yearly exams, I got 68% and my teacher asked me to drop to Standard. But I told her that I was willing to prove myself and let her know that I was capable of doing Advanced. Fast forward to year 12 and I got 92% in the half-yearlies and 87% in Trials. You definitely have the capabilities of Advanced, but you must stick to your commitment to do better because Advanced requires more work. I believe in you!

Stay in Advanced, but work your ass off. You're lucky that you're not being forced into Standard—at our school, if you're within the bottom half in ranks then the school drops you to Standard. So, use that result as an impetus for academic improvement. Hold out for as long as you can and see how you go :)

Just some quick advice: i was in a worse position than you (got a mark 48/100 for advanced in prelim). Just got my final report last week for year 12 and I got a mark of 89/100. You can do it, but its defintely an uphill battle.
