Just to add on to what everyone else is saying (which is perfectly correct), I'll also try to explain it briefly as well.

Positive --> provision of something
Negative --> removal of something
Therefore, positive punishment will be the provision of something (e.g. an electric shock) to reduce the likelihood of the undesired response occurring again
Negative punishment will be the removal of something (e.g. money) to reduce the likelihood of the undesired response occurring again.

So when you 'receive' a fine. The piece of paper that says 'fine' does not do anything. Instead, it is TAKING AWAY your money. Therefore, it is negative punishment (response cost).

Hope this was brief and clear :) Let me know if you need anything else!

Perfect addition, the more explanations we get from different perspectives, the better!

ok so for this scenario:

After Cassie flirted with someone else at the party, her boyfriend stpped talking to her. Cassie didn't flirt at the next party.

is this an example of positive punishment? since cassies behaviour has caused her boyfriend to stop talking to her which is an unpleasant stimulus?

Wouldn't it be response cost? A desirable stimulus is being removed (boyfriend talking to her) to decrease the likelihood that she will flirt with someone else at a party in the future (undesirable behaviour).

This would be response cost because it is the removal of a desirable stimulus (boyfriend talking to her). It cannot be positive punishment because you cannot provide the lack of something.

Hope this helped
