quick clarification of what the heck this means

scrolling through jakes headstart slides (which are truly a gift to this planet,,, god/other bless his soul) but anyways i was looking PHB section and under the history subheading it says : ICI began growing in large quantities. not too sure what this means and if anyone knows woul they be able to enlighten me? thanks angels
