How to deal with a late afternoon exam?
« on: November 03, 2017, 10:38:31 pm »

Hey guys!

I have my first 3/4 exam this coming Monday (busman; I know, day before melbourne cup, a school holiday, and yet not a public holiday..) between 3:00pm and 5:15pm. I haven't been in a situation where I have had an examination this late, and was hence wondering what I should do on the morning/before the examination. Any strategies to deal with such a wait? (Sleep in, revise etc).

Thanks a lot!

Good question.

I think one of the most important things for any examination is to ensure you have a well balanced meal beforehand to make sure you're fuelled for the exam - even though you may be nervous, try you hardest to eat something. As for dealing with the wait, it's completely up to you. I'd suggest doing your favourite recreational activity, whether that be reading, playing sport, watching a movie... As for revising, I would recommend you don't just for the sake of keeping your mind clear but if you're prone to being nervous (like me), then it's ok to flip through your notes even if you're not really reading them.

Ultimately, whatever you do is up to you and you can't do anything 'wrong', so just relax and think positive thoughts.

Best of luck for the exam.

I was in your exact position last year!! My first 3/4 was HHD and it was also in the afternoon slot. Personally, I just slept in, briefly went over my notes and did things to relax and destress myself (last point in particular is important cos no doubt you'll be nervous and super stressed since's it your first 3/4). Also, try to get to school well before the exam (I got there around lunch). It's pretty overwhelming to think that this will be an exam that actually counts, and getting to school early will allow time for everything to settle in. Also gives time for a potential pep talk from your teacher (my teacher gave me one and honestly, it was one of the most helpful things walking into the exam room with).

All the best!! ;D  ;D

sleep in you don't want to be waking up too early.

if you feel like you have done your best this year I wouldn't be too worried about going over any notes or anything but it would be okay if you need that to calm your nerves :)

To build on the already great advice here, I'd say:
- Have a nice sleep in! Make sure you get a good night's rest :)
- Chill out in the morning - have a good breakfast, and do whatever you enjoy that makes you chill. Maybe read over a few notes or clarify anything you're not 100% on, but try to keep the study on the minimal side
- Get to school a few hours early (bring a good lunch with you) and again, chill out lol - maybe go have a last minute talk to your teacher, meet up with friends and quiz each other on some stuff if you want to
- Just relax and talk to your friends before the exam! If listening to music helps you get in the zone, do that also. Make sure you've had plenty of water during the day and that you're not hungry, make sure you've got all your pens and stuff ready to go, and just get your head in the game and ready to ace it.

The main message is to relax. I personally made a point to not study on the day of exams besides maybe a tiny bit of light stuff before afternoon exams, but really - any study you're going to be doing won't be that useful. What you've learnt during the year, and the revision you've done in the lead up to the exam is the important stuff!
Would love to second getting a pep talk from your teacher, especially considering it's your first 3/4 exam! I went and spoke to my Revs teacher before I sat my exam in year 11 and it was awesome - I was really revved up for the exam and felt confident in my abilities.

All the best for your exam! I'm sure you'll smash it. :D

It's just an exam ^^. You go about how you usually do =)

Just turn up to the exam.

Advice?
- Don't tire yourself out during the day
- Have a coffee or Redbull if you're tired.
- Maybe nap during the day.
