Hey Guys,

I saw Zhen did this for the VCE, and I think it would be nice to do this for the selective school part of the forum. In this topic I'm going to be posting daily about what I did today to study for the Selective school test (Year 10). Feel free to join in, I just want to be able to look back at my my daily progress, and see whether I made it in or not, and if so I can improve on the things I didn't do so well in.

Hey guys,

So in this section I'm going to be writing everyday about the work I did, and the problems I faced today and how I overcame them (If I did)! Everybody is welcome to contribute, I just thought it may be interesting to see what their process was to getting into their particular school. Anyway, with out further a due... So today I wrote 4 essays, and did some comprehension and verbal reasoning practice (in the form of a work sheet). Overall, I did quite a lot of work, I'm trying to write 3-4 essays/stories a day. The only annoying thing about that goal, is writing them up on he computer for marking... As any student, the worst problem I had was trying to avoid procrastinating. I'm pretty sure the reason why I procrastinate is because of where I do my work. Right now I'm working on writing and comprehension. For Christmas I'm getting some practice test from spectrum etc. and ICE-EM year 9 and 10 textbooks. I'm also looking at Henderson's courses on the Selective school, geez they're so expensive, I guess it's kinda worth it, anybody have any ideas on this? I'm sure these tutoring business earn a pretty penny out of this selective school affair.

So please to anybody, ( I guess this can be a general discussion forum as well) who wants to read and contribute please do, any help will really be really appreciated...

Thanks,
Hugo :) :) :) :) :) :) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Hey Guys,
So today I decided to take a break. I wrote two essays, and was planning to write another story. Though I think that procrastination got the better of me. Anyway I think I’ve got 4 essays/stories already ready for marking.

Also, I’m asking anybody on behalf of the marking section, we are always welcoming new markers. I think it’s kinda hard on Zhen to mark all those essay/stories.

Anyway, another thing; anybody who has advice or is willing to give it please PM me. Anything will help.

And anybody who is selling their work to prepare for the exam, please PM me (as long as it is a decent price)

With kind regards,

Hugo

Hey,

So on Saturday and Sunday I decided to take a break. I used this time to relax and sleep in etc. My ICE-EM books arrived, and I wrote my essays/stories on the forum for marking. Overall quite a boring weekend. Also some time this week, I'm going to be doing some volunteer work.

Checklist for next week.

1.  15-20 essays/stories
2. Finish a whole chapter of ICE-EM book
3. Do 5 worksheet of comprehension/verbal reasoning

Thanks for reading,
Hugo

Hey, so today I completed 1/2 a chapter of ICE-EM year 9. I also did a comprehension and numerical reasoning sheet. I planned on writing 3-4 essays, but I was just to tired.

Wow, you really study hard for it.
Hope you get in!!
I'm just casually writing essays and saving the practice tests to do closer to the test date.
I'll probably write mine too!

19th of December 2017
The first full day overseas. This morning we stayed in our apartment, unpacking as from yesterday when we arrived, it was night. This afternoon, we went shopping at a mediocre size mall. I bought a new watch and some random food. Tonight we were planning to go to the Canton Tower (search it up, it's breathtaking) but we didn't for some reason. Now, 8:27pm, I am currently writing this post :)
I will probably write an essay now.

Guys focus on the achievements and don't forget co curriculars. For MHS yr 10 entry I'd say its about 40% entrance exam and 60% co curriculars. You need a reasonable mark to get into the interview but after the interview its mostly co curricular based. They want to select students that are well rounded and can contribute positively towards the school community.

To add to that, it's the commitment to the co-curriculars that counts, not how many activities you do (obviously if you are committed and find doing a couple of co-curriculars meaningful, it would serve you well). Doing co-curriculars and sport are already compulsory at MHS, and many students there are involved in debating (they have 10 teams in year 9) and music. Focus on the way in which co-curriculars can shape your personal development, like how it fosters skills such as teamwork, perseverance, commitment, leadership, critical thinking, service, creativity and public speaking skills. You will actually have to talk about your extra-curriculars in this manner, rather than just providing a list on what you've done. Obviously being state/national level or extremely proficient (and having a tangible achievement to prove it) at something is a bonus, but this isn't necessary, as the school is more concerned about commitment and growth (they recognise that some people are potential 'late' bloomers), as you would be provided various opportunities at MHS to further your sporting, arts, music, debating, volunteering and leadership interests.

Hey,

So, I represented my school in basketball and debating, out of school I participate in marital arts and swimming. I’m also thinking of joining the school band.  I’ve also just completed my second last guitar exam. I recently also did community service, and I have just been elected S.R.C. I’ve been on a bit of a hiatus, but gonna get back onto the groove soon.

P.S. any tips about anything, is appreciated!

It's unfortunate because it's a flawed process, because the achievements that they value heavily favours students from private schools: where a breath of co-curriculars are offered, where you are sure to have debating teams and coaches that inspire you to be good as well as a performing arts and music program. Obviously, there are opportunities for students to pursue these activities outside of school and become good at it, but this kind of proactiveness at a young age often relies on parents' encouragement (and at times how much money they have).

I guess in any situation, you have to do the best with what you've got (are are doing). As I said before, it's not about what you do, but your commitment to them. The school can tell the difference (since all students are the school have to do co-curriculars and the commitment level obviously varies as a result) between doing something for the sake of doing co-curriculars and being committed at it. The amount of opportunities that people have to pursue co-curriculars (and to become good at it) varies, but you have to make your commitment and the way they have shaped your personal development clear to the school, as well as how the programmes the school has will provide you more opportunities to further your interest/capability in those fields.

I'm from a private school. Is that a good thing if I'm trying to go in at year 10? :o
