Keys to VCE Biology Success for 2018

Hello Everyone, (please, before reading my 'guide', look at my edit at the 'footer': I feel it is necessary to foresee my intention. Thank you)

I thought it would be useful to create a thread solely to provide details on what I believe necessitates success in VCE Biology.
These threads are all over the place and I am sure you will be able to find other useful information elsewhere, however, to provide a unique outlook on the course, the main offerings that I can provide are based on the fact that I have used most VCE Biology textbooks (at least the ones I could get my hands on....). Therefore, I hope this new insight provides use towards you and your future studies.

To begin, I achieved a study score 47 in VCE Biology. This was done through hard work, dedication and pure passion for this extraordinary subject. VCE Biology enables for students to gain a truly distinctive view on the natural world around us and can also facilitate success in other ('similar') subjects (i.e. VCE Chemistry). Anyway.... enough about the vague discussion of the subject - more into the 'nitty gritty' of things.

Firstly, no matter what your school or institution uses as a textbook, you MUST, and I repeat MUST, get your hands on one or BOTH of these texts:
(1) Jacaranda Nature of Biology 2 (all chapters can be obtained for free on the Jacaranda website :) )
(2) Heinemann Biology 2
If you can only choose one, pick Jacaranda Nature of Biology 2. These texts, of the ones I had utilised (which included Nelson and Campbell (an entry-level university text)) were most definitely the most well-written, correct (not always) and detailed. Nelson often lacked detail, important information (i.e. large chunks of biotechnology were completely dismissed: literally, not even in the text despite being key elements to the study design and APPEARING on the end of year examination....) and was, at times, completely misleading. Heinemann Biology 2 was awesome, it had beautiful diagrams, was a true pleasure to read and OFTEN provided adequate detail, however this text also had lacking areas to which I thought were of up-most importance (i.e. human change over time). Jacaranda Nature of Biology 2 was freaking fantastic. It generally covered all aspects of the study design (and often beyond: treat that with optimism or negativity, your choice) and was of great detail, often providing necessary information (to prevent misinterpretation) where other texts lacked. However, be warned, it does also miss out on some details necessary to the study design (i.e. no mention of plant immunity). This is why I would recommend you purchase MORE than one text OR borrow it from a friend.

Now, the next texts: these are the supplementary texts that I recommend in order of decreasing importance:
(1) Biozone (THIS IS A MUST (in my opinion))
(2) NEAP smartstudy
(3) ExamPro (seriously good for clarification and revision on each topic)
(4) VCE Checkpoints (this is great too)
(5) A+ Notes (awesome revision) or ATAR notes course notes.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
(1') PRIMARILY EXAM PERIOD: TSFX notes are godly..... without these - you have lost a considerable 'edge'.... no joke.

Now, I am not going to go through each individual text in detail - I will provide a brief description of each, however.

(1): This text consists of a multitude of worksheets for each topic. The questions are based around VCE past exams, however it is nothing like checkpoints - only better.
(2): This NEAP text is written by an awesome chief examiner for VCE Biology. I can assure you that these are some of the more difficult questions you will encounter (when I say this I am referring to the NEAP smartstudy exams.... the smartstudy questions are quite good too).
(3): ExamPro is written by some of the most talented and successful VCE Biology students. The tests are numerous, with 4 trial exams included. This guide is extremely unique as it has ridiculously detailed solutions with embedded theory and comprehension questions not found in any other texts I have encountered.
(4): I feel like this deserves no description. It is merely a text that includes nicely formatted and set out past VCE exam questions in a area-of-study by area-of-study fashion. Definitely purchase this... however it is not on the top of my list as these questions will be encountered when you do practice exams towards the end of the year.
(5): Concise notes. Well written. Both texts receive the same rank as they are both very good in their conciseness and clarity.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
(1'): Where do I even start. Best explanations, best descriptions, awesome questions.

Anyway everyone... Good luck. I hope your 2018 endeavours are fruitful! :)

EDIT: After much controversy regarding the expense of these texts, I would just like to clarify that it is NOT necessary to purchase them all in the pursuit of success in this subject. I do not want you to feel that this is the primary purpose of this post. In fact, the goal here is quite the contrary. I am hoping that by providing insight and through my subjective analysis of each text, you are able to make an informed decision on what texts are best for you. Textbooks and secondary resources are highly personal. I might suggest that a resource is necessary for ME, but it may not be for YOU.
Please, please, please do not feel disadvantaged and belittled by what I am stating. I am here to help, not to be the detriment of other's esteems.

Awesome guide! I’m sure many prospective biology students will appreciate the insight into the best materials to purchase as there can often be too many choices.

To add to this list I’d also highly recommend the Connect Education notes as they cover the content on the study design very effectively as well as give exam advice.

Although you’ve touched on this, I think checkpoints can be problematic for students planning on doing lots of past exams as the questions are repeated. Good to see you have recommended the NEAP smartstudy questions as a valid alternative (particularly for students doing bio in year 11).

Good stuff man. I have received samples from connect education, but never acted to actually purchase. I am sure they are worthwhile given your recommendation. :)

I would add to this list - download Andrew Douch's biology podcasts. Aligned to the study design and full of great exam tips.

Thank you for the guide and congratulations on the amazing results. I was just wondering how you studied with so many textbooks/resources? Did you take notes from all of them or just end up using one for the majority of the time?

I know that my school uses the Nelson text book but thanks to your suggestion I will probably purchase the Nature of Biology as well when doing units 3&4.

Sorry if this is a really naïve question; I am new to VCE and am doing Bio Units 1&2 next year. I have begun studying and am really enjoying it!

Good post. I agree that Biozone is great, and I have looked at the TSFX notes; they're pretty good too. However, I do think it is worth stressing that whilst such an abundance of resources can be helpful, it is not strictly necessary to achieve success. A lot of these resources are quite expensive, specifically TSFX notes and lectures, and whilst they are certainly helpful, I think it's a little hyperbolic to go as far as to say they 'make you'. Although they do often provide useful information, I encourage everyone to also consider free alternatives if they don't have the money to buy so many resources. Personally, I instead primarily resorted to finding resources online, which not only were free, but also provided quality explanations and in depth information, on par and sometimes even better than most paid resources.

If you have the money, buy as many resources you can; they are indeed a convenient way to access relevant information. However, don't sweat it if you can't get your hands on such guides! I know going into VCE I was a bit stressed with regards to the abundance of texts available, and their often high prices. However, there is so much free information online, including here on AN, making it very much possible to achieve success without a multitude of textbooks and guides!

Adding to what Vaike said, I didn't even have a textbook, my school decided to use the edrolo 'textbook' (spoiler: Its not a textbook - other subjects are good but not bio). We had a few classroom textbook that people borrowed, which I had for one weekend. I also had checkpoints which I barely used, and the AN topic tests (I did about half) and the AN course notes.

Even with my dodgy resources I got 44, so definitely don't feel like you have to go buy everything.

Heya!

Firstly, welcome to AN! Not a naive question at all, definitely an interesting one. How you study with multiple resources is definitely a personal choice. I had a textbook (sometimes two) and one study guide for most of my subjects, and found the best way to go was to use the textbook as my first source of information, and then use my guides and perhaps most importantly, online videos and articles, to supplement areas of the text that weren't covered so well as I wrote my notes.

Also, just be aware the most of the guides listed are primarily for the 3/4 subject. I didn't use any external resources for any of my unit 1/2 subjects, as most of the content in 1/2 is not able to be assessed in the 3/4 exam. By all means, if you feel like you need the extra resources for 1/2 go ahead, but try not to feel as if they are necessary!

Connect Education Notes are the best summaries imo
ATARNotes notes (thushan) are the best conversational style learning resouce.
ATARNotes exams (at least from the last SD) are v.good if you are aiming very highly the exams are quite difficult and I don't think many people would score 90+/110. I scored around ~90-93/110 on those in timed conditions and got a mid 40 in bio.

Just to back this up the only resource aside from my textbook that I had was studyon (the jacaranda version of checkpoints)  and really I could've just gone through the past VCAA exams and sorted the questions by topic myself. My school did the edrolo free trial at the end of the year but I don't think that really made a difference in the end.  So no tutoring or commercial notes, didn't pay for any revision lectures, and got 47.

Definitely possible to get any score without lots of money.

I like the post as a whole but listing any resource as a "must" made me feel uncomfortable

Fair comments from everyone.

I didn't mean to seem condescending or in any way exaggerated in my 'guide'. I apologise if this made anybody feel uneasy. I, however, solely commented on my own experience with VCE Biology and attempted to provide the best insight possible. I can certainly agree that I overlooked the cost (apologies indeed), as TSFX notes are quite expensive.

To further add prominence to my apologies, I would just like to say to anybody who is unable to afford all of these texts that my intention was not to, in any way, suggest that purchasing any of these is completely necessary for success, I merely stated that some texts (i.e. TSFX notes) provide a considerable 'edge' (which, in my opinion, is truthful). I did not insinuate that you cannot succeed without these texts, thus the reason why I ranked them from best to worst so that you do not have to purchase all of them - only the best of them. I would also like to point out, you can technically obtain the Jacaranda Nature of Biology 2 book online for free. Jacaranda posts samples on their website of EVERY chapter (I believe) and you can download these samples (they are identical to the text, however, it just has the word 'sample' with low opacity covering each page).

Note: I have a friend that also achieved a 47 in Biology just using the Nelson textbook and some class handouts.

I wish the best of success to everyone and if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask :)

Great question! Similarly to Vaike, I did not have all these texts or any external resources when doing VCE Units 1&2 Biology (maybe except for VCE Checkpoints), however, any head start is great to get you into the right habits!
I was able to study with all of these resources as I used pretty much all of the time that I had at home to read and do questions. I also, most recesses and lunches, studied too. I did primarily end up using only a select few resources when my time started to dial down (i.e. approaching exam period), these were primarily: Nature of Biology 2, Heinemann Biology 2, VCE Checkpoints, NEAP smartstudy and ExamPro. If I had to dial down further, however, it would have been Nature of Biology 2 and NEAP smartstudy.

To be completely realistic, VCAA exams are the best resources of them all. Best part is, it is free.

I know that my comments at least were not intended to be a  criticism of you or to suggest that you have been condescending. Rather, we sought to provide clarification and ensure that students reading this don't panic if they can't get access to those resources.

You have clearly made this post to help biology students and I think that it will be a valuable resource. You've done a good thing and I certainly don't bear any ill will towards you.

Hi. I know this thread hasnt been posted on for a while, but just wondering... you mentioned that you can obtain the Jacaranda chapters for free on the website. How are you able to do this? I couldn't see when I was looking!
