Going to uni.
Isn't uni easier than year 11 and 12?

Mod edit: Split off from "Things that shit me" due to irrelevant discussion in thread.

As somebody who has done 5 years of study at uni, VCE is no comparison.

I think generally, you are studying a discipline area that you are interested in so you are more likely to invest time given the interest area. I know this was certainly the case for me & IT. So while the content is different in terms of difficulty, you will take the time to push through.

I like your thinking though - if you maintain that after say, a few weeks at uni, then you've definitely found your perfect course :)

ok.. maybe a few weeks is a bit generous given the repetition of intro content

That Year 12 was the hardest year, academically, of your life was probably the biggest lie I was ever told :') Soz VCE students but it does get harder.

Aaron has a point though, whilst it gets harder it also gets more interesting so the challenge doesn't feel as laborious.

My tutor emphasised how year 12 is the hardest academic year and uni gets easier? So is he wrong?

Technically, yes and no. Yes, uni is harder since the actual content and standards are set higher. Just like how Year 10 to Year 11 is going to be harder, so will uni. However, no, it isn't necessarily harder for everyone... as you're tested differently and everyone in there has more interest towards the area they're studying (or at least in consensus they are), so it doesn't feel as laborious as previously mentioned. Since it's also a very flexible and independent way to learning, some find uni to be easier for them. At this rate, it's basically like comparing apples and oranges, so it's really a harsh statement to make.

EDIT: Also, typically, time and commitments usually change in priority between Year 12 and uni.

Back to the thread topic, when you open the door and a fly decides to traipse (uh, I mean fly) casually into your house... and you just made food.

For me , it kinda is when I only turn up to half my classes and say put in minimum study ... but hey (not recommended for most people) lol

I used to put in so many hours for the HSC and I now put in so little hours (It's important to note that I do a degree with significantly less hours but yeah...)
I practically spend literally a quarter to half the hours I would put in for Yr 12

There's also less pressure as I don't have to achieve x atar or ranks.

(but then again my marks haven't suffered... so I guess I'm lucky)

I feel like university is far more challenging, as it's the kind of environment where you realise there is almost no limits in the amounts of knowledge, and sometimes you want to push yourself to those aspirational standards. Even within the subjects, the content is taught at a far deeper level at a faster pace.

Year 12 is probably only more difficult in the sense that you are reminded on a regular basis throughout by teachers, your peers, the school (and sometimes tutors), how much content there is in the course and how hard to need to work to reach an end goal. University doesn't have those kind of systems where people push or constantly remind you to do things, so it can all be pretty cruisy until you have to cram for assessments and exams (which is hell). Also people in VCE tend to feel more pressure and thus place a fixation on grades compared to university, as most of the time, getting a lower ATAR could mean altering your career options and path via the course you do (not taking into account transfer options which many students are unaware or feel hesitant about) whereas with university once you are in the course, the short-term stakes seem smaller (working in a big company vs. small company). People in university tend to care more about the short-term stakes (unless you are thinking of doing grads), such as what they will do straight out of uni, whereas people in VCE worry about the long-term stakes about future career pathways.

This thread has been split off from Things that shit me due to the irrelevant discussion formed in that thread. A reminder that posts in a certain thread must be relevant and contribute to the purpose/intention of the thread. In this case, the conversation does not meet this criteria in any way. Thanks :)

I think year 12 being the  "hardest year"  academically for the general population isn't a statement that's completely off the mark but given the people on ATAR Notes (where the median ATAR is probably in the very high 90's) it won't be the case due to the majority going onto uni and generally a difficult course.

I'd 100% agree with that. For me, I found yr 12 slightly challenging but not too difficult to push my way through - and I was rewarded with some pretty decent marks, higher than people around me were saying that I would get. But after having finished my first year of uni, I can say that is definitely more difficult than VCE. That's because it's not only keeping up with the content, but the assignments, constant revision and workload all crammed into 12 weeks (13 including mid-semester break) really drains you, so you have to keep up with the workload in a far more organised manner than VCE - otherwise you can expect your marks to slip severely. Also, nearly all of my uni subjects have needed me (out of own decisions) to attend extra consultations or classes outside of the regular lectures/tutorials for each subject. This also drains you a lot, as you have to have the energy to get through the day and then ask questions at the end of the day to help you do the best you can in your subject. Also, I feel that for the majority of us here on the uni forums, we all want to have our classes in 3-4 days of the week only, and work on the side if possible. This makes it a far tougher prospect than VCE, as you have that added worry to keep up with your uni workload whilst juggling your part-time job on the side.
