Preference question

If someone has course X as 1st on their preference, and I have it as 3rd, does it mean that the other person has a higher chance of getting into the course (given that I don't get into my 1st or 2nd)? Course X is my back-up course, so to speak.

Nope, I don't think there's any difference at where you've put the preference. As long as you haven't been offered an offer in that round and you're above the clearly-in for that course then you and the person who put Course X as preference 1 have exactly the same chance of getting an offer from the uni for that course.

Thanks for the reply! So to clarify, it wouldn't hurt my chances of getting into a desired course if I put a course that I am below clear-in-rank as 1st preference for second round offers?

A few things:

* Universities don't know where you've put your preferences or what order they're in. VTAC sends your preferences to each of the universities independently and are considered independently.

* It's an equal playing field - if you have your preference in #3 whilst another has it in #1, you'll both be considered in the exact same way (meaning they aren't weighted based on preference number). What will be considered is your ATAR (this is used as the primary ranking number for selection).

* If you are below the clearly-in, a few factors will be considered which will influence whether or not you get your course: a) your ATAR, b) whether you meet the prerequisites, c) middle band considerations, d) number of places remaining in the course after clearly-in offers have been made.

* Anyone who wants to offer you a place will make the offer to VTAC (which then displays it on their behalf). HOWEVER, only the highest preference that you've received an offer for will be shown. Therefore, any offers made below the highest one offered are not shown (it is essentially the equivalent of not being offered it in that round).

* Remember, most offers are made at round one so if you intend on participating in rounds 2 or lower, have a backup or two in case nothing works out. Accept your first round offer, always as a failsafe (incase it doesnt work out.. something is better than nothing. You can always withdraw if you get the one you want in 2nd round).

Hope this clarifies a few things.
