Molecular or Micro biology for Zoology and Genetics majors?

Hi all! I actually started a topic over a month ago about needing some help with unit choice and I got some really good info back.

I'm starting my second year and am looking to major in Genetics and Zoology. I've enrolled in both core units, plus Biochemistry (a pre-req for Vet Medicine - something I want to leave myself open to). This leaves an elective, that I had decided would be Molecular bio. However, now considering other units, I'm starting to think Microbio would better suit Gen, Zoo and Vet - especially Zoo and Vet).

If anyone with experience with these units or majors could give me advice, it'd be hugely appreciated.

Hey I remember that post! My friend who does a microbiology major says that for vet med, it’s probably not as relevant. He says it might be better to use those slots for immunology (slightly closer) or as electives to do what you want (so molecular bio to complement genetics and biochem or even something else entirely).

However, going from the requirements you stated last time, my opinion is stick to MCB as that fulfils the second cellular biology requirement. I would highly recommend that you also check the requirements for other vet courses at other unis as back up and try fulfilling several of those. If you need further course advice regarding the specifics, I would see Science Student Services.

Thanks for helping me out again hahaha. I agree that immunology would be better suited for Vet. I was thinking Microbio for Zoo, because of it's relation to ecology and animal health/function, but I think this unit in particular wouldn't be too useful.

I contacted Melbourne Uni and apparently the BIO1011 and BIO1022 sequence should fulfil the general/cellular requirement. Even the Zoo units should, too. Though I do agree that Molecular bio may be the most useful, so I'll likely stick to it. I plan on talking to Science Student Services, but unfortunately I can't until late O-week, unless I can call or email.

Thanks again!
