Forgotten Words Help Thread

Hello :)

Since AN is such a broad community, with many lexically endowed English students, we might be able to help each other remember forgotten words?

The word I want is the one that means "defined through its functions" or "described through its characteristics" or "characterised by what it does". I know there was a word that meant that - I've just forgotten it!!

Edit: my question is , what is the word for when something is "defined by what it does" ?

 :D

My initial thought was autological, but I don't think this is really what you're looking for?

How about just self-defined?

Human characteristics? That would be anthropomorphic.

Idk I get what you're saying but I don't think there's a word for characteristics in general maybe break it down into using a word for human or non human characteristics which would be anthropomorphic and personification  respectively

Not exactly the same request, but this is the closest thread I could find and I didnt think this warranted another thread...

Is Conflictious a word?
I mean, it's an error in Microsoft word and other processing software, but some online dictionaries do list it.

I would have though conflictual is the word for that. Derived from 'conflict', right?

Prolly the better word, but doesn't work as well in the context... :(

Ah well, I guess we must all sacrifice something to the fulfilment of English... =|

"What makes a word a word?" is seriously such an interesting discussion. Worth its own thread haha.

What makes a word a word?
J41 SOS

I guess it’s about being used enough in not totally colloquial/slang/informal registers, and then the word is submitted to lexicographers (who make dictionaries) who make a call about whether or not to accept it in the dictionary.

But in a broader sense, I think a word might just be any collection of sounds (other than grunts) that can be written and have a relatively clear meaning?

EDIT: HAHAHAHA when you cry for help but help already arrived 3 minutes ago.
If only ambulances were like J41.

Embiggen and Cromulent would be prime examples?

They were coined by the creators of the Simpsons... According to wikipedia.. .:D

Edit:
Embiggen was semi-coined.. It was already a neologism...
