UniMelb Public Lectures

Hey guys,
I somehow ended up on the emailing list for Melb Uni's free public lectures (have been for a while now actually).

Anyway, some of them look interesting, so if anyone's been or knows anything about them,

Are they actually interesting or are they boring?

Will I be the only one there or will I have to fight for a seat?

How hard is it to figure out/get to where it is? (My sense of direction is terrible  ::) )

You'll have to fight for a seat as it's unimelb very popular. And unimelb has some of the best lecturers around who are good at keeping people engaged so while I guess it's subjective whether you'll enjoy them or not I'd bet you'd get some value out of going.

Feel free to PM me about anything, happy to give advice about school and/or uni.

It depends on the lecture. Some will be so popular you have to register and may miss out if you don't get in early enough, especially if they are a big shot international guest.

It's good to keep an eye on them and check out any that sound interesting to you. Great way to keep up to date on the state of research in your area of interest.

If you like neuroscience, The Florey put on regular public lectures that are often worthwhile.

It's really luck of the draw.

I've been to a couple personally and they were interesting. I saw Paul Keating speak last year (I think?), which was pretty cool. A few years back I also got to see Paul Nurse speak, who's the head of the Francis Crick institute in London and a Nobel laureate for his work on cell cycle control. He was genuinely very, very engaging and very interesting. We also got to have a small chat afterwards and he was so warm and friendly, which was great.

I went to Michael Higgins (Irish president) lecture and I really enjoyed it. I highly recommend going to the lectures if there is something that you think you may enjoy.
