I think we have diverted a bit from the topic at hand. Somebody (who regards English as being a weakness) needs the best mark they can possibly get. Getting 40 is not impossible, but it will require work.
You would first obviously need reasonable SAC marks as they make up 50% of your mark. However, it is often underestimated how much the exam can change your mark. I agree with a lot of what people have said in this thread. The word bank is a great idea - just don't depend on it. I wrote a word bank (and a phrase bank, if that makes sense) after i had written a lot of essays. A lot of 2008er's would probably agree that after writing a lot of essays on the one book or movie you begin to find trends in what you argue. By this i mean that you will often use the same examples, but tweak them to fit the question. You sometimes even use the same words and sentences. So in using a word bank you need to be strategic. Write a list of topic sentences or even sentences to start your essay. This will ensure that you work effectively in the exam.
I don't want to write an essay here so i'll wrap it up. I was always told that practice is the best way to ensure a good mark. In regards to English this is entirely true. Write essays, a lot of essays. Devote equal time to all three sections, and go into the exam confident. Use unique examples. Keep a clear head. Write simply, yet deeply. But most of all, know your texts! That is all.
