Questions about practical

Hi guys!
So we recently did a prac investigating respiration in yeast. We put paraffin oil over the yeast suspension. I suspect that this was to stop oxygen availability but I am not completely sure. Could someone please explain whether or not oxygen and carbon dioxide are able to pass through paraffin oil?
Thanks.

Not sure about carbon dioxide, but you are right. It is to prevent oxygen entering the solution below the oil. This ensures that only anaerobic respiration is occurring/that there are only anaerobic conditions in the apparatus you used.
